It's certainly do-able, though I would suggest to allow maybe about 4 - 4.5 hours to be comfortable.
The actual distance is about 280km according to Google Maps.

I presume with your suggested plan, that you'll be staying in Perth first, then proceed south, and head straight back to airport on the final day?

I will spend my first 4D3N in Perth City due to business trip, and I planned to extend my stay to another 4 nights to cover MR.

Hence this is my rough planning:

- Rent a car and proceed south from Perth City in the morning
- Spend 1 night in Busselton
- Spend 2 nights in Margaret River

Balance with 1 night, should I spend it on my way from MR -> Perth
so it will not be a tiring drive? And maybe can you suggest any nice location to spend my 1 night on?

OR add another 1 night on the route:
Perth -> MR, maybe at Mandurah?
Then I will drive straight back to Perth city from MR for my departure flight in the evening?

Remarks: There is no kids / elderly involved in this trip, just the 2 of us. Therefore I am quite flexible with any arrangement, just that the dates are fixed and I can extend to 5 nights instead of 4 nights but I feel that 4 nights are just nice.

Thank you for your suggestions / advices.

1st point.. u do realise that Busselton to MR takes about 45 mins? Hence, unless u are the type who likes to switch hotels, i would suggest that you stay at the same location for 3 nights instead of splitting between Busselton and MR.. Some people actually use Busselton as a base to explore MR region.

4 nights is quite plenty to cover MR region.. If u do not mind driving, u can even consider driving over to Albany for 2 nights.. perhaps adding an extra night to your trip will make it more relaxed.

FYI, the fastest way from Perth to Busselton takes about 3.5 hours.. and that can be achieve even if u stick to the speed limit.

Yes, I am aware of the distance but i read that Busselton has a nice town and i'm interested to visit the underground observatory & sugarloaf rock.

Nah, Albany is quite far. I guess i dun want to spend too long time behind the wheel at 1 shot.

Do u think i should spend 1 night on a location on my way back to Perth or just straight drive from MR to perth to catch my flight?

Thanks for the suggestions / advices.

You have a total of 4 nights, so actually you could consider a road trip staying at:
- MR
- MR
- Bunbury
- Bunbury

That's actually quite a relaxing trip.
Will give you plenty of time to explore the MR region and also the coast around Busselton-Bunbury.

Thanks for the recommendations, I will do some research on Bunbury.

Straight drive from MR to Perth would be my choice. I have done so for the 3 times that i visited WA. You will need around 4 hours to get there from MR.

Think Kevin recommended that u can consider spending 2 nights at Bunbury. In case u cannot think of places to visit from there, u can consider visiting the town of Donnybrook, famous for their apples.

Donnybrook seems like a lovely town and it is only 35mins away from Bunbury based on Google map. However i will need to check whether the month of May is the season for Apples.

Thanks for the suggestion, it definitely interests me as compared to my findings online where popular tourist attractions are often being recommended instead.

Donnybrook is a rather small town and May-June is the apple picking season iirc. Bunbury is quite a big town but there isn't much to do there imho. The only thing I remember about Bunbury is The Happy Wife cafe lol.

MR to Perth you can just drive straight back, 2-3hrs depending on speed. There are number of stops you can take along the way

Thanks Swatchie, haha I may visit The Happy Wife café, it sure looks good from the website.

Beano, I'm still deciding whether to stop and spend a night on the return route as most likely my flight will be in the evening or to drive straight back.
The route back to perth will be the same as the route to MR right?
(Based on Google map).

Thanks.

2P actually means the maximum you can park is 2hrs; it doesn't mean its free for 2 hours. Its only free if it doesn't state ticket.

Obviously I know that, I'm damn sure there are free parking near those residential areas near fremantle.

Which cave is recommended at MR? I am deciding between Jewel and Mammoth Cave.

And usually how much time is needed per cave?
