Interesting thread. I am in the process of building up my third NAS but I've decided to go with Unraid instead of FreeNAS.

I really don't like all the discussion on ECC RAM where the belief on need vs. no-need is almost militant.

Unraid is alot more forgiving on the mix of hardware and disk compositions, as well as pool expansion. In exchange for all that flexibility it foregoes the absolute rigor that zfs has.

Considering moving from Asustor to Custom Free NAS

Currently running Asustor 4bay
NAS

think DIY building FreeNAS OS
saw aliextpress do this
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33038670915.html
for a start how can the mitx board fix to this casing? how to mount?

also the cooling on the CPU ...should i go for stock cooler? as space is so tight?

1) It will be a bit tight, but not totally impossible. Do check with the seller if you need to get a motherboard with integrated CPU (lower height) in order to fit it in. You can look at Asrock, Asrock rack or Supermicro for such motherboards.

2) I will normally go for stock “low profile” heatsink fan. Do check the height clearance of the casing before purchase.

they told me 3.5cm height max

Initially wanted to start a new DIY NAS thread, but just realized that I created one few years back (before I left for overseas work) in hardware clinic, so might as well use back this thread to share a home project of my new DIY NAS project using the updated TrueNAS Core.

Purpose of the NAS:
1) Run VMs
2) qbittorent download machine then Resync back to main NAS library
3) Replicate the nextcloud data and other server data on my main NAS
4) Sync to S3

The specs as below:
1) CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1245 v5 at TDP 80W
2) Mobo: Asrock Rack C236WSI
3) Chassis: OEM Supermicro storage chassis
4) Memory: Samsung DDR2133 2 x16GB ECC Ram
5) HDD: 4x existing HGST 2TB HDD (existing vdev)
6) HDD: 4x WD Red Plus CMR 8TB (new vdev)
7) boot drive: SSD Intel 240G (old drive)
8) NIC: 2x SFP+ Chelsio NIC (carry over)
9) Fans: 1x Noctua PWM 12cm, and 2x Noctua PWM 6cm
10) Cooler: Noctua NH-L9i

Old NAS to be upgraded:

Overview:

how much does the chassis cost?

Scythe S950M looks like a fit at 31mm. Can look around taobao for alternative too.

You can also look for motherboard with passively cooler integrated CPU.

but if i go for ryzen i don't think this fan is compatible

35mm will be very tight. I will either get a taller casing or a motherboard with integrated EPYC from asrock rack if I have to go AMD.

not sure how to buy from TB...got link?

Whether to run Synology OS or TrueNAS core, you should read up more before you commit.

I will say the Brtfs is more inferior to ZFS. If you want enterprise class reliability, ZFS is the way to go.

Hope it helps.

If storage are for mission critical, or meant a lot to you, using ECC is a no-brainer. The price is not too much a difference as compared to non-ECC and a second hand CPU server chip is pretty reasonable too.

The debate on the use of ECC will only make sense when users truly understand how memory errors occur and why you need ECC. Recently, even the creator of Linux OS openly recommends the use of ECC for normal usage, and blasted Intel for making ECC obsolete. If users do not understand, non-ECC memory will work, but that does not mean the flaw of non-ECC memory will automatically disappear into thin air. Just be prepared for any quirkiness the system might bring you throughout its lifetime, or worse a silent corruption in your data pools.

no lah...don't think i go for server class.

just need DLNA and data storage for home use but need higher transfer speed than my asusor

Long ago, when ram were only in megabytes, it's a barely noticeable problem.
Now that rams are in gigabytes, the very minor flaws of non-ECC got amplified 1000x and getting noticeable.
By the time consumers get to 100s of gigabytes, the problems will be seriously noticeable.
But then, market forces will automatically move to ECC for new systems.

Nice.
