Sengkang to get new dog park at Rivervale Shores, butterfly garden at Anchorvale in 2025: WP MPs
And an edible rooftop garden in Buangkok.
Sengkang residents can expect to see new and updated amenities and developments in their estate, with some to be completed in the next few months.
This was announced by Workers' Party (WP) Members of Parliament (MPs) for Sengkang group representation constituency (GRC) on Apr. 5 at the Sengkang Sculpture Park, a community space that will also be revitalised with Sengkang's heritage as a fishing village in mind.
Speaking to the public and media on Saturday morning, Jamus Lim, He Ting Ru and Louis Chua announced the five-year masterplan for the town in the northeast of Singapore, which includes the projects planned for, as well as the routine works that have been carried out as part of estate upkeeping.
Dog park
A highly-anticipated amenity that will be opening this year is the Rivervale Dog Run at Rivervale Shores, a recently completed housing project at the edge of Sengkang
Construction of the dog park is currently underway and will be completed in the first half of 2025, He said, providing a timeline for the project.
The idea for the dog park was first mooted by a group of dog owners, who submitted a proposal to Chua.
Sengkang Town Council then conducted a comprehensive one-month survey between October and November 2024.
Out of 271 responses, 72 per cent of residents expressed support, including a significant proportion of non-dog owners.
To address potential noise concerns of non-dog owners and residents living in the vicinity, the dog run is slated to operate within designated hours with regular works carried out to maintain the facility.

Butterfly sanctuary and hydroponic garden
The rooftop of a multi-purpose hall in the Anchorvale precinct will be transformed into a butterfly sanctuary and hydroponic garden, with construction works to start next week, He said.
It will house flowering plants and nectar sources, and serve as a education resource for families and schools as it allow visitors to get up close to the winged creatures.
The hydroponic garden will allow residents to cultivate their own edible greens and herbs to promote urban agriculture.

Edible rooftop garden
A new edible rooftop garden in Buangkok has also been planned for and will allow the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, and herbs by residents.
This is following the success of two existing community gardens in Sengkang, one of which is multi-storey rooftop garden at Block 156A Rivervale Crescent.

Masterplan five years in the making
Speaking about the long-term nature of the masterplan, He said: "Work on the masterplan started five years ago when we took over Sengkang town. We see this as a process that cannot be done just towards the end."
"It is an ongoing thing that started from the beginning when we came in and very quickly take over," she added.
It has been a work-in-progress for the team since then.
Lim highlighted improvement projects that have been completed, such as "new playgrounds and covered walkways".
He added: "About 50 per cent of the estate has undergone R&R (repairs and redecoration works) and the remainder will be done in the next several years."
"We have taken residents' input very, very seriously. Some of these involve additional residents or elderly corners, for instance," Lim said.
Community involvement
However, the town council and the MPs in charge will not be the only ones spearheading plans.
Sengkang residents aged 18 to 30 will be invited to apply to join a steering committee to shape the design of the Sengkang Sculpture Park, which houses the iconic whale sculpture as its main feature for the past two decades.
The initiative is for individuals passionate about community planning and design to step up to shape and transform the living environment they live in.
Previously, the Sengkang residents had also chipped in by submitting logo designs for Sengkang Town Council, as well as engaged in mural paintings in the estate while assisted by professionals.
Beyond residents' involvement, Chua also highlighted the provision of electronic waste recycling bins initiative in Sengkang, which is carried out with the support of e-waste processors.
Shortage of halal food options addressed
The WP MPs were also asked about their efforts to address residents feedback, in particular, regarding the estate's apparent shortage of halal food options.
Acknowledging that he has been provided ample feedback regarding this issue, Lim said his team has conducted surveys of each and every coffee shop in Sengkang to find out about the availability of halal food.
"When we discovered that there were occasions where a halal food stall was closed prematurely before the end of their particular contractual term, we then raised it up and asked what kind of safeguard mechanisms are there for us to potentially ensure that halal food options continue to be available," Lim said.
The team then looked into the measures to be taken to ensure halal food options remain.
He added: "We always start with working with the relevant agencies as much as we are able to, before then using also our forum in parliament as a venue which we can raise pertinent issues that matter not just to residents of Sengkang, but to the rest of Singapore."
When pressed about whether the trio will return to stand in Sengkang GRC for the general election due by November 2025, the MPs demurred and said more plans will be revealed in time to come.
He said: "
Akan datang (Coming soon). This is a town council event, we really want to focus on Sengkang town and the plans that the town council have. As and when the election campaign kicks off later this year, you will hear from us and hear from the party as well."
