Every election is difficult for the opposition: Pritam Singh

WP chief Pritam Singh says every election is a challenging one for an opposition party.

The margin of victory in Aljunied GRC during the 2015 General Election was very small, he says, although there is a perception out there that this constituency is a “done deal”.

“There are no done deals. Every vote is important to us,” he says, adding that if Singaporeans believe that a more balanced political system and a more balanced Parliament are good for the country, they need to vote accordingly.

Pritam Singh on whether WP is attracting more ‘elites’

When asked about whether the party is attracting more higher calibre and “elite” candidates this election, WP chief Pritam Singh said the real strength that the new candidates have is their courage and gumption to “walk through the door”.

“I don’t think this is found in very generous quantities in Singapore today, and we hope to normalise it, and attract more (of such candidates) to the WP,” he adds.

He says that WP's candidates are a broad church of Singaporeans, representing people from all walks of life. And what the party wants is to carry views from different segments of society, he adds.

WP can’t win one-third of Parliamentary seats yet: Pritam Singh

Responding to a reporter’s question, WP chief Pritam Singh says that WP will not be able to meet the party’s medium-term objective of winning one-third of Parliament seats in this election.

“We will not be able to meet that one-third number of candidates to fill one-third of Parliament opposition MPs,” Mr Singh says.

say no to parachuters, edmw and oppo ibs don't double standard...
lol, EDMW now got more pap supporters than opposition to be honest, if not almost equal.

and opposition ones can hardly count as parachuters because not enough to field in the first place, you take what you can get.

Funding is always a challenge for an opposition party: Pritam Singh

WP chief Pritam Singh says that funding has always been a challenge for the opposition, and is particularly difficult amid rising cost of living.

The WP on Tuesday had made a public call for donations to help the party “continue to be a credible, responsible, and constructive voice for Singaporeans”.

He hopes people who are invested in the success of Singapore and a more balanced political system can make a contribution.
