Had the same dilemma ,about a year ago. went with the pro in the end.
Its quite easy to decide if you weight the difference.

Air vs pro
non-retina vs retina
12hrs bat vs 9 hrs bat
specs wise pro is better
0.22kg heavier on the pro

summary
portability to me not much difference (only 0.22kg heavier)
battery wise the pro is not bad compared to typical windows notebooks
pro about $300 more for better specs + retina display (IMO worth it)

You can opt for the air models with more ram and storage.

try looking at the refurbished section... you can get even greater deals. and apple's refurbished products are as good as new... you cant tell the difference if you put the products side by side. i personally have bought many refurbished products from them and i am happy with it. save a few hundred bucks. my mbpro with customised specs was from the refurbished section.

If you do not need to run heavy stuffs, Macbook Air is fine and I strongly recommend to have the memory upgraded to 8GB.

If you are looking for a desktop replacement Macbook Pro Retina is recommended and since the memory is no upgradable so you have to decide whether to stick to 8GB ram or upgrade to 16 GB ram.

with the new haswell processor which gives long lasting battery, macbook pro is now as capable as macbook air in terms of battery life. 12 hours of usage is kinda overkill IMO.

With additional $300, you will get 8GB memory instead of 4GB. Better cpu. Better graphic cards. More connectivity ports. And retina display.

One thing that I would personally still love from macbook air is that tapered design.

I recently ordered the refurbished 13" rMBP (2014) with 8gb ram and 128 GB SSD, and on the first day itself, the MBP started to kernel panic on me constantly. Resetting the SMC and PRAM; and even re-installing OS X didn't help either.

I guessed I was just unlucky that I got a lemon refurbished MBP. Had to return it and get a refund, and I ended up with buying a new one instead.

totally opposite of mine.

i bought a rmbp 13", but the wifi seems to hang every few minutes (no connection), had to reconnect every single time. Tech support are nice but provide no real fix. Google it and lots of people randomly experiencing the issue. My guess would be software conflict with that hardware problem.

end up returning and waiting for my refund.

QC of mbp is down the hill after Steve Jobs died. nobody seems to care about details anymore.

I keep going around the challenger stores and lifting the macbooks but find them heavy, not sure if its due to the locks behind the macbook making the macbooks heavy.

Personally think today's MBA is more than adequate for most needs. Just get the 8GB model and at least 256GB of storage if it's to be a main use computer.

No diff with 11" or 13" except the screen size and the SD slot.

hehe its still heavier than my mums ultrabook toshiba protege z30 though.

waiting for a lighter re-iteration. suspect i have a slipped disc or a strained neck or something. 3 weeks already still stiff if i am at a desk pc for long.
