In December of 2023, Google announced the first version of Gemini and the company is reportedly planning to launch Gemini 2.0 a year later.

According to The Verge, Google wants to announce and “widely release” Gemini 2.0 in December. Today’s report/newsletter adds that the “model isn’t showing the performance gains the Demis Hassabis-led team had hoped for,” but it appears that this “trend is happening across companies developing leading, large models.” Beyond that, there are no other details on what functionality to expect.

Last December, Google detailed Gemini 1.0 and made 1.0 Pro available through Bard (before the rename), while Nano came to the Pixel 8 Pro. In February of this year, 1.0 Ultra became available in Gemini Advanced.

This new model would follow Gemini 1.5 in February with its expanded context window, with gemini.google.com subscribers getting access to it in May.

By “widely release,” Google might be planning to replicate that two-prong availability for both developers and end users. Meanwhile, we’re still waiting for Project Astra to launch and add camera/vision capabilities to Gemini Live. It’s unclear how Google will balance both announcements.

OpenAI is also rumored to release its next flagship model in December, though the company has denied The Verge’s report. However, Orion is supposed to see a more limited launch with partners first.

If December pans out, Google would have a yearly release cycle for its biggest models that comes roughly between the May I/O developer conferences.

After switching to an “Ask Gemini” prompt at the start of this week, Google is making even more tweaks to Gemini on Android that make the app look better in dark theme.

The ‘plus’ sign at the left that lets you upload files/images is no longer housed in a circle. (There are no changes to the gemini.google.com interface.) As such, it gets a little but bigger, with this change made throughout the mobile Gemini experience, including in conversations.

Meanwhile, the microphone and camera pill drops the light blue background. It’s now a very light gray that matches the Gemini Live button. This design is not as distinctive as before, but is straightforward enough and ever so slightly better for the dark theme.

We’re seeing these ‘plus’ and dark theme changes in Gemini with Google app beta version 14.42.

Google has been making a slew of tweaks to the Gemini app in recent weeks, with simplification apparently being the overarching goal.

After introducing for the latest Samsung foldables earlier this year, the Gemini overlay now has a shortcut that lets you quickly enter split-screen multitasking on large-screen Android devices.

The Gemini overlay adds a centered handle bar on the top edge that you can drag to have the chatbot be side-by-side (left/right/top/bottom) with whatever app you were just using.

This might be handy if you’re reading or watching something and want Gemini to be immediately accessible.

We’re now seeing this split-screen shortcut today on the Pixel Tablet and Fold after previously only getting this when using Gemini on Samsung devices. It’s not showing up on Android phones we’ve checked today.

Google’s work on adding more basic features that make Gemini a good phone assistant continues today with the ability to place calls and send messages without unlocking your device.

In Gemini Settings > Gemini on Lock Screen, Google is rolling out a new “Make calls and send message without unlocking” setting.

Under an equally new “Outgoing calls and message” heading, the page explains how “You’ll need to turn on your calling and messaging apps in Gemini for these features to work.” At the end of October, Google started rolling out new Gemini Extensions for “Phone” and “Messages.”

Those Extensions are not yet widely available, but this new setting works without it by falling back to Assistant. On a device lacking this “without unlocking” preference, I have to “Please unlock to continue” (as depicted below).

With the new setting enabled, the call is immediately placed while my phone is still locked.

The “Make calls and send message without unlocking” setting is not yet widely available and still rolling out. We’re seeing it with Google app 15.48 beta after a server-side update.

The “Utilities” Gemini Extension has been rolling out over the past few weeks, and it’s now seeing wider availability in the Android app.

With this Utilities Extension, the Gemini app will stop using the Google Assistant fallback for basic tasks, like turning on the flashlight. To make sure it’s available, launch the Gemini app > open multitasking and tap the icon for App info > Force stop the Google app.

  • Set and silence alarms
  • Set and stop timers
  • Turn the following features on or off: Flashlight, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb, and Battery Saver
  • Check your device’s volume and battery level
  • Power off or restart your device
  • Take a photo and screenshot
  • Control media, like pause or replay a video
This also enables the ability to have Gemini get information out of Pixel Screenshots.
