TL;DR
  • The Pixel 9a is allegedly on sale in some regions before its official release.
  • The phone is featured in a 10-minute-long unboxing and hands-on video showcasing all facets of the device, including benchmark scores and camera samples.
  • Google has not yet announced the Pixel 9a or its pricing and availability.

The Pixel 9a is a hotly anticipated addition to the Android mid-range segment. Leaks have suggested that the phone will launch in March, so about any time now. If you can’t wait for Google to unveil the phone, you can buy it before its launch, as it seems the Pixel 9a has already gone on sale in some regions. A reviewer has also already posted a Pixel 9a unboxing and benchmarks video, so there’s practically nothing left to leak.

Leaker Roland Quandt spotted that the Pixel 9a is already on sale in Dubai. According to a listing on a regional classifieds platform, the 128GB version of the Pixel 9a is priced at AED 2,350 (~$640) by the lister.

Pixel 9a listing ahead of launch

Since this is likely a regional reseller taking advantage of the pre-release demand, the final retail pricing in regions like the US could be closer to what we expect for the Pixel A-series.

If you want to know more about the Pixel 9a, you don’t need to worry about shady listings. Dubai-based reviewer Sahil Karoul has already received the Pixel 9a, giving us a clear unboxing and hands-on of the upcoming phone alongside its benchmark results.

The video shows the Pixel 9a in all its flat camera bump and thick display bezel glory. With the Pixel 9a, users will likely get a SIM ejector tool and a USB-C to USB-C cable in the box. We can also peep at the flat aluminum mid-frame, and the device apparently weighs only 187g.

Leaked Pixel 9a unboxing and specs

The video also shows that the Pixel 9a runs Android 15 out of the box. It also goes over some benchmarks, and the Pixel 9a scores 1,049,844 on AnTuTu, 1,530 and 3,344 on Geekbench 6’s single-core and multi-core CPU benchmark, and 2,604 on 3DMark’s Wild Life Extreme Stress Test. The video also mentions that the phone throttles to ~60% of its peak performance during various stress tests, but it allegedly didn’t get hot during these benchmark runs.

The video also covers the device’s 48MP primary rear camera, 13MP secondary rear camera, and front camera, and there are a few photo and video samples to examine in the video.

The only remaining surprises seem to be the official pricing and availability details. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait for Google to unveil the product officially to learn these.

Skip 9a... I more excited about the tsmc tensor now....
Ya man, Samsung's node Tensor really meh... with Google move to TSMC, maybe finally can get better efficiency and thermals. surprisingly, the Pixel 9 Pro/Pro XL has great thermals 💪

Ya, the sensor downgrade a bit sian, expected better. design wise, haha, really got that Shenzhen 'inspired' look. but if performance solid, maybe still can close one eye? :s13:

TL;DR
  • Google has revealed that the Pixel 9a has a macro mode for photos and videos.
  • This mode uses the main camera rather than the ultrawide lens as seen on other Pixel phones.

The Google Pixel 9a is finally official, and it looks like one of the best cheap phones of 2025. In saying so, one camera-related upgrade may have slipped under the radar.

Google confirmed that the Pixel 9a has a macro mode for taking close-up shots of subjects. However, the new phone takes macro shots via the 48MP main camera rather than with the ultrawide lens as is the case with high-end Pixel phones.

The Pixel maker says the phone’s macro mode automatically kicks in when you get close to a subject. In saying so, it’s a safe bet that a toggle will be available to force macro shooting, as seen on Pixel flagships. You can also record 4K macro videos in case close-up photos alone aren’t good enough.

Google told Android Authority that macro mode on the Pixel 9a works best if you’re five centimeters (roughly two inches) away from the subject. This means you should be able to get very close to a subject, ostensibly without having to crop.

The Pixel 9a wouldn’t be the first phone to shoot macro images via the main camera. This was a common practice on earlier smartphones, especially older devices with small, low-resolution (i.e. 5MP to 20MP) camera sensors that allowed you to get very close to subjects. Using the main camera also means you aren’t practically on top of your subject, as is the case with ultrawide cameras, casting your shadow on it or potentially scaring it away (in the case of insects or animals). Using the main camera for macro mode also means you can get images without the distortion seen on ultrawide cameras.

We’ve asked Google whether the Pixel 9a’s ultrawide camera also has macro functionality and autofocus, but the company reiterated that macro mode works via the main camera.

TL;DR
  • Google launched the Pixel 9a today without opening pre-orders or even sharing a precise release date.
  • This is a marked departure from past Pixel announcements.
  • The company now confirms that concerns over component quality are driving this new approach.

Google just formally introduced the Pixel 9a, its latest attempt at offering a slightly more affordable point of entry into the world of Pixel phones. And despite being one notch down from flagship status, it still delivers a pretty darn attractive hardware package, including the largest battery in a Pixel phone yet. But news of the Pixel 9a’s debut hasn’t arrived without a little unexpected uncertainty, as Google has yet to share full details of its plans for both pre-orders and the start of actual retail availability.

With phones like last year’s Pixel 8a, Google opened pre-orders for the hardware immediately, and communicated a specific date for the phone’s release. With the Pixel 9a, however, all we have from Google so far is that sales will get started sometime in April, and while there will once again be a pre-order window, Google is waiting to announce exactly when that will begin.
What gives? Why such a drastic change to the company’s approach to this release?

We reached out to Google in the hopes it would be willing to shed a little light on the decision, and the company has just followed up with some insight into what’s going on here:

“We’re checking on a component quality issue that’s affecting a small number of Pixel 9a devices.”

Now, we don’t yet know (and to be fair, never may) exactly what phone component might be causing those headaches, but fans of A-series Pixel phones already have hardware failures on the mind in the wake of the Pixel 4a’s battery controversy. That’s all the more reason for Google to take its time with any potential problems this time around, and possibly delaying the start of sales briefly in an attempt to avoid a bunch of warranty claims later.

Of course, now we’re probably just going to have every new Pixel 9a owner putting their phones under the microscope, wondering if they might have a bad component that slipped through the cracks, but one thing at a time.
