I believe there are some exemption on it.

Do they charge me for bring in my own laptop just because i carry in something worth more than $600?

If you bring in Cigar, alcohol, etc, then it's a yes.

As mentioned, read http://www.straitstimes.com/singapo...g-i-bought-overseas-8-things-you-need-to-know. Check with IRAS for more detail.

Cigar, alcohol, etc are of different type of goods, they're controlled items. GST is simply based on the value, not type of goods/whether it's a controlled item.

GST is a tax on local consumption. All goods brought into Singapore are subject to 7 per cent GST regardless of whether they are imported through commercial shipments or hand-carried by travellers for their own personal use.

Such goods include new articles, souvenirs, gifts and food preparations purchased overseas and meant for the traveller's personal use.

Any goods you buy in overseas and bring back to SG to be used in SG, which exceeded the $600 amount, it is your responsibility to declare and settle the GST that may be imposed.

In addition, since someone mentioned removing of packaging and price tag...

IS THE ITEM STILL SUBJECT TO GST IF THE TRAVELLER REMOVES THE PRICE TAG/PACKAGING AND USES THE ITEM BOUGHT OVERSEAS IMMEDIATELY?

These items are considered as new articles and are subject to GST if the traveller's GST relief amount is exceeded when the new items are brought into Singapore.

You open and use it also need to pay gst. But if your laptop bought in singapore and you brought it over then no need to pay gst when you bring it back.

This is kind of a gray area right? What if I've been overseas for a few years, bought an expensive item overseas a few years ago and have been using it for a few years before coming back to Singapore. Still need to pay?

A regressive tax especially for items that are bought overseas and do not have anything to do with services that the pap gahmen provides :(

In before someone says this is not edmw :p

Been digging the look since the leaks, and the Quite Black one looks dope. Reviews seems to be glowing too. In the verge's video review Dieter ended with this...

"We've never seen Google take on Apple this directly before, and they're going toe to toe. Google will tell you that this is going to be a really long fight, and it's only the first round, and they're right. There's no knock-out punch here, but not on either side. The Pixel goes head to head with the iPhone, and doesn't fall down. For a first try, that's really exciting."

That's high praise considering how good i think the iPhone 7 are. haha. Camera looks dope too. Too bad won't be sold here officially, if not would be a good alternative to the Note7. :s13:

Actually you have paid GST for that laptop when you bought it in Singapore.. Government just want us to pay GST for anything used in Singapore, be it bought here or overseas, or.. wherever..

You open and use it also need to pay gst. But if your laptop bought in singapore and you brought it over then no need to pay gst when you bring it back.
