Google posts Android 12 Developer Preview 2.2 with April security patch and bug fixes

Build SPP2.210219.018 sees an upgrade to the April security patch that stable Android 11 Pixel devices received on Monday. The full changelog identifies the following fixes:

• Fixed an issue that sometimes caused the Settings app to crash when a user tried to access Bluetooth settings. (Issue #180962266)
• Fixed an issue that caused widgets to be removed from the home screen after a user installed an OTA update.
• Fixed an issue that caused notifications to be sent about low Bluetooth call quality even when call quality was currently unaffected.
• Fixed an issue that caused WiFi network passwords to not be saved in some cases.
• Fixed an issue that caused the notification shade to be activated when typing on the on-screen keyboard.
• Fixed an issue with Codec 2.0 that could cause apps to crash on some devices.
• Fixed an issue that could cause videos to be encoded incorrectly when shared.

Google rolling out Android 12 Developer Preview 3 for Pixel phones

This release offers a number of tools for app developers to improve the user experience:

• New app launch animation: To make “app startup a more consistent and delightful experience,” Google is introducing a default animation from the point of launch, splash screen with the app icon, and transition. Developers will be able to customize the splash screen’s background, replace the app icon, control timing, and more.
• New incoming/outgoing/screened call notifications: Meant to improve visibility, scannability, and consistency, the new CallStyle template is available for dialers or chat apps with video calling. Rising to the top of the notification shade, they support multiple default and custom actions, and can be customized with a large avatar image, text, and button color hints.
• Improved web linking: URLs that haven’t been through Android App Links or manually approved by users are immediately opened by the default web browser instead of the “chooser” dialog.
• Richer haptics: Android 12 is introducing support for more expressive effects, like a low tick, as today’s actuators feature broader frequency bandwidth. The goal is to allow developers to create “informative haptic feedback for UI events.” Similarly, game developers have more access to motors in game controllers. Google says, the Pixel 4 offers the fullest examples of these upcoming APIs today, and that it’s working with OEMs.
• More-flexible backups: Developers can now set different rules (including encryption requirements) for cloud backups and device-to-device transfers. For example, large files can be excluded from the former method, but included in the latter.

Google will make it as easy as possible for you to try the Android 12 public beta on your device, by offering the Android Beta Program. This allows anyone enrolled to update their Android device to the public beta and receive over-the-air updates for free. This same beta program was used for Android Nougat, Oreo, Pie, Android Q/10, and Android 11. It's simple. You don't have to flash updates or anything that complicated.

Here's how you get started:

1. Visit google.com/android/beta to sign-up for the Android Beta Program.
2. Sign in to your Google account when prompted.
3. Your eligible devices will be listed on the next page, click to enroll in the Beta Program.
4. Go to Settings > System > Advanced > System Update to check for available downloads. It should show up within a few minutes.

If you've used the Android Beta Program before the Android 12 public beta, you will need to re-enroll your phone. Once you're enrolled, you'll continue to be updated to every new version of the Android 12 beta automatically, over-the-air.
