had a disastrous week so far in espresso pulling.

1) Extraction from bottomless pf spewing everywhere. This is because of channeling right? any tips? I currently do not distribute the grind also. Using espro

2) Zero froth in milk at 65 deg C. This is the part i had zero success since getting the bz13. I really have no idea how to froth milk. It just heats up.

Hey guys!

Just thought I contribute to this thread a little.

Shot Pull:

Free Pour:

Equipment used:
La Pavoni Stradivari
Lelit PL53 Grinder
Black Rattleware Teflon Jug

Bean Profile:
17.5g Brazilian Beans (From Jewel Coffee)
Aged 2 weeks

I think I could have grinded the beans a little finer. Still ain't getting the zebra striping. And not the best pour I did XD

I think you need to adjust the grind size finer and/or up the dosage of coffee grounds. The flow of your espresso is very fast, which is commonly known as the "blond gusher". You can read more here: https://www.home-barista.com/naked-extraction-common-problems.html

By making your grind size finer, you will be able to extract more flavours out of your coffee. If I'm not wrong, your espresso should taste quite weak with thin body. Give it a try and let us know if it's better.

Extraction spewing everywhere is not good :(

My suggestion is to distribute your grounds, it really makes a huge difference. Every proper barista will know that distribution is the most important step in getting an even extraction. Read Matt Perger's Barista Hustle, he covered this in a lot of detail.

Also, check your tamping - uneven tamping will cause channeling. Last resort is increase the dose of your coffee. From personal experience, underdosing my basket almost always leads to espresso spewing all over.

This page will help you troubleshoot better: https://www.home-barista.com/naked-extraction-common-problems.html

I'm going to upload a few videos of my milk frothing and free pouring later today, hopefully it will help. If your milk is just heating up, you are 1) placing your tip of the steam wand too far down and 2) you are not creating a vortex.

This is a quick video that I took on Instagram for milk frothing: https://www.instagram.com/p/BDhn3AYwsIm/?taken-by=joecurious.sg

If your grind size is very small and water is harder to pass out, higher chance of squirting around.
Quite common if you want to get a very slow flow.

Actually it doesnt' matter as long the taste is okay to you.

For frothing, just slant your want and put the tip about 0.5 cm from the surface of the milk.

Keep your hands steady.

ok i will try wdt and see how it goes.

I realise i mistook the brewing. Previously i only placed 1 cup under the PF. If this is what I'm doing, assuming i have 16g dose, what should the volume or weight for the espresso in the cup after the standard 25 to 40 seconds?

Depends on your brew ratio - if you are using 1 : 2, then you should have 16x2=32g of espresso in your cup. If you prefer a shorter shot, then you can use 1 : 1.7, so you should get 27g of espresso in your cup. Experiment with different ratios and see which one tastes best to you. Different coffees will require different calibration :)

25 secs 50 to 60 ml total.
25 secs is count from the first drip.
16g I will probably do max 29 seconds.

40 secs to get that amount is very slow, risky of over extracting and very bitter. No wonder it splatter.

For 2) use water and dishwater soap to practise first. Find the ideal wand position and jug angles. When you are confident, then use milk.

Maybe reduce by a tiny little less than 0.5 gram, I think most retention is what's stuck between the burrs which it still can't get out. The nozzle is huge so expect higher chance of the grinds shooting outside the portafilter. On the other hand the burr is pretty tiny.

As it claims that is the top burr spinning instead of the bottom. There's only a small space to put a motor. So I really doubt when it emphasized on its claim about the torque it has to move a truck. The motor might be slightly at the back moved by many gears n shaft, such contacts mean more affected by wear and tear, still can't load a big and powerful motor. All these can give you an idea on its longevity.

The bottom burr not moving to loosen who escapes also might raise some questions.

Good to see more innovations though

Wow the Sette looks promising, now I have another option to consider when I have to replace my 5 year old Preciso!

On the topic of grinders, does anyone else here use a Preciso and have encountered a clicking sound when grinding (without beans)? I'm not sure if I should be concerned or just leave it since it works fine still.

You have a Preciso that lasted 5 years?! That by itself is a miracle! Good for you!

I had to send it for some repair work recently as the shaft had some wear and tear and couldn't engage the gears anymore. Other than that, it's been serving me well - guess I'm super lucky! Regular cleaning could have helped prolong the lifespan too.

on the topic on grinder, need recommendations on a good grinder. Looking for below $1k. I'm the only one drinking in my family T_T, so my choice is quite open.

On my current shortlist are these:

1) Vario-W
2) Smart Grinder
3) Baratza
4) Infinity

Any other reco also welcome!

Thought you bought the Bezzera BZ13, you should had got the Quamar M80E 63mm burr at $899 or BB005 at $499.

I think from the list, i will skip the Infinity and maybe the Smart grinder.
For Baratza, i will probably only consider Vario.
