Depends on your equipment, if you grinder is able to spit out clump free and fluffy grinds evenly across the portafilter, i would say using a distributor can help prepare the grounds for tamping easily. However if your grinder spit out clumpy grinds and unevenly across the basket, using a OCD will not help in anyway. You would still need to use a toothpick to break up the clumps and distribute them evenly. The OCD only distributes on the surface and it certainly does not help with the clumps.

Plus one. Socratic coffee did a test. Using OCD leads to lower extraction rates. OCD also did not reduce the variability of the extraction rate (consistency)

Assuming a more even puck leads to high extraction rates and better taste then using an ocd may not lead to a more even puck and better taste.

I always find a floating ant in my water tank. No matter how many times I emptied it, there's always an ant after 1-2 days. Any tips on how to get rid of this? There's no trail or anything sweet near the machine. Surprisingly, if I leave it for a week, the number of ants dont increase. :s11:

Me too .... exactly the same problem, also no solution at the moment :(

Those are real tiny ants, like to do a mass suicide on any pool of water left unattended ....

The thing is I have lots of booby traps and ant poison at the bottom. Doesn't seem to help. Unless the ant is tom cruise in mission impossible that enters from the top lol. Now that the ant ended up swimming, I might be the one getting poisoned slowly.

Which machine are u using? I'm using the gaggia classic and find it to be a critical flaw. Why leave the water tank unsealed and allow ants to go in?

Also looking for a solution to this, otherwise I have to take out the tank every few days for a good rinse..

I'm using Strega. After a thorough cleaning around the machine, no more ants now.

Price point, size and looks. Bezzera was in my list until I found out that rocket can be had for a much better price. The other rockets a bit larger, although got pid. Like the Giotto and mozzafiato

see if you can test it out at Chye Seng Huat. Also to appraise the quality and compare with other similar machines on the market before committing.

Ok good idea. Anyway I’m not in a hurry to buy. House not ready yet. Still using entry level pressurized basket machine

How much are you getting Apartamento incl. shipping? This was in my shortlist before I decided on the Strega.

I don’t know. Haven’t buy yet. So don’t know shipping and gst come out to how much. But one thing is sure, still cheaper than buy in Singapore although no warranty.

I’ve been using the Appartamento since 2016, and my grinder is Sette 270. I’m looking at upgrading my grinder as I would like to up the game of grind consistency and fineness.

Anyone has any recommendation? I’m certainly not looking at any commercial level grinder, but also looking at something that will be significantly better than my current Sette 270 (but not overshot with my almost entry level Appartamento).

I did some research on this brand called Ceado, which a lot of youtube vide shows that they produce very fluffy grind (much better than Sette), but I don’t think there is any distributor here in SG.

Any recommendation?

Can consider the new E37SD. Ceado has very low retention. according to the wholelattelove test about .44g.

I used a settle but now using a EG1.

Sette is fast and the grinds is fluffy but the particle distribution is so so for espresso and horrendous for filter. Too much fines choking up the paper filter.

I switch between filter, espresso and different beans often so i went with EG-1. single dose, easy to dial in and remember settings. Got it with their core burrs for espresso and filter and their low fines SSP burrs. Both are excellent but i preferred using the core burrs as there is more range setting for espresso.

Ceado is using a similar size flat burr. So if aligned properly i suppose it can produce a good particle distribution.

Don't think a good grinder is an overkill for the appartemento. A good grinder will complement it very well. more consistent flow rate if you weigh your doses and time your extraction.

Any interest here? Some beans might be discounted.

Regarding grinders, how does one judge the grinder quality? How different will your coffee taste between a basic grinder and a better one?

taste is very personal

For filter - To me very clear cut narrow particle distribution is the way to go. Better clarity of flavours less muddiness in the coffee. I was sieving out by grinds with the kruve sieve to get something decent before getting the EG-1. Its not that the filter brew from a wider distribution grinder is less enjoyable (I believe hunger/thirst is the best spice). Its just that the flavours are less discernible. Does not do justice to buy expensive coffees and muddle up the flavours (refering to taste here). Aroma wise I don't believe there is a difference between grind quality.

For espresso - Less clear cut but similar to filter. Espresso are cleaner tasting. You could say more elegant. Able to grind very fine and get good flavour separation and balance with light roasts (filter type roasts). Able to go with 30 sec preinfusion and 50 sec extraction to get something really balanced and sweet with a light roast. Previously when I was using the sette, the brew would still be a bit unbalanced with this brew recipe for light roasts, bitter and unpleasantly sour elements are still present. why brew espresso with light roasts? to get the filter style sweetness and aroma. espresso roasts may have the roasty notes overpowering the more delicate aromas.

besides taste a really consistent grinder with no retention between shots lets you be consistent with your extraction too. A speculation: a more narrow particle distribution allows for easier tuning of the coffee recipe.
