Anyone try this Mypressi Twist Espresso Maker before?

twist-espresso-2.jpg

Mypressi Twist Espresso Maker

Used it for some time. It was good while it lasted. But, within the first year, had to request warranty repairs 3 times. Sticking trigger, leaking pressure, leaking water, "exploding" gas pressure, etc.

I ended up with 3 handles, 2 bowls and many 'O' rings. Then they shut down. They were back for a very, very short while with a new engine and pressure system. But, soon seem to have shut again. I gave up and got a Silvia.

I suppose I can dig out the box and try to mix & match parts to get 1 working set. But.... I'm not sure if I should bother.

In any case, the company doesn't seem to be around anymore. So I'm not sure where it can be bought. But, if you're thinking of getting it, you probably shouldn't. No warranty support for such a fiddly item would be extremely frustrating.

By the way, you can use either CO2 or N2O. Although not so airline friendly, the cartridges are allowed if you carry it with a life jacket that also uses these same cartridges.

Pity they shut down. It's one of the more elegant portable espresso solutions I've seen. Design issues can be fixed with future iterations.

went to Yahava just now to try their beans.
http://yahava.sg/pages/koffees.html

ask for their espresso blend, 10days since roast day the guy said. I ask if there's any recent roast, he recommend the 'Black Gold' single origin from Papua New Guinea which they roasted just yesterday. Bought a pack of 250gm($16) to try.
CzstNSz.jpg

I find freshly roasted beans are easier to grind. Halfway through grinding, sweet chocolatey smell fills the air. Can't wait to taste it. However, the 1st pull is a disaster. Due to excitement/lack of caffeine/sheer laziness, I didn't perform my usual routine of levelling and nutation. Major channelling ensues. I quickly stopped the shot at around the 6sec mark to prevent further spillage. It looks like a pipeline had burst at the bottom of my naked portafilter. After cleaning up the mess, I proceed to grind my 2nd shot.

The 2nd shot. 30gm at the 20th sec mark. Runs a little fast but tasted ok. Pulled this at about 93°c on the thermometer. A little acidic at the beginning but ends with chocolatey taste.

My 3rd shot is drowned with milk.

Maybe later I'll aeropress it.

Thanks for the sharing. Now have another coffee roaster to try after I get and finish the squaremile red brick.

It looks like a darker style roast from the extraction. How many grams of coffee did u use for the pull?

Too much fizzy acidity could be due to the roast being too fresh. :)

I use 16gm. Thats my standard for espresso.

Just finished a cup using the aeropress. Same grind settings, 18gm with 85°c inverted. Nice bold flavour and nutty aftertaste.

Tried 3 different espresso blends today.

Papa palheta's throwback + nuts n bolts

Nylon bokasso.

Made The throwback at home, with 18g dose, ristretto style 27g shot. Had very thick body, very creamy mouthfeel, dark chocolate notes predominate. Aroma...smells like...coffee...nothing to write home about.

Nuts and bolts was made for me at CSHH, normale espresso style. Smooth mouthfeel but with lively and pleasant acidity that doesn't threaten to take over the whole experience. Aroma..smells like..coffee...again nothing to write home about. But i still took a bag home to experiment more.

Nylon's bokasso i've been making at home over the past week. A single origin ethiopian. even when make with 18g dose and ristretto type 1.5 brew ratio , the mouthfeel is relatively light but still smooth. Acidity is mild despite being a light roast, bitterness is minimal. This espresso is "sweet". Aroma...this is bit..flowers! Smells deliciously perfumed and one of the more exciting SO i've tried. Despite being a SO its not difficult to pull a desirable drink.

Summary, all 3 beans make very decent espressos. If you like heavy bodied one with balls try the throwback. For fairly "standard" espresso (Medium body, balanced with some interesting acidity) try the nuts and bolts. If you would like something with an interesting aroma (for an espresso) i recommend the bokasso!

Cheers!:s22:

Ethiopian beans are my current favorite SO! I finished 3 bags of yirgacheffe already! I 1st tried them at geisha cafe and bought home a bag after that. Yes, that flora aroma is what got me hooked.

I tried throwback before. Chocolaty and nutty. But I prefer their terra firma blend. Because it had Ethiopian beans in it lol!

I feel like ordering from nylon as they roast on demand. Anyone staying near amk wanna lompang and share the shipping?

Did a test to vacuum out all the left over grinds in the grinder after grinding to weigh how much left over grounds are stuck in the grind chamber. Only managed to get 2 grams this time instead of 10 grams. Could be in the previous test i did not fully grind out all the beans before proceeding to vacuum out the grounds.

Hm...maybe tomorrow will try to make comparison shots with no purging and another day with only 2 gram of purging to see if 2 grams is adequate.

I did a mod on the porlex grinder to stabilse the outer burr with paper shims wedged between the outer burr and the metal body. FOr the inner burr i glued it to the plastic burr carrier to the lower for better stability. Seems i get much less boulders. Fines slightly less but still present.....guess can't expect much from small ceramic burrs which are not sharp. :(

You can order on their website and self collect (enter self collect in promo code) to save on shipping. Dropping by allows you to try a cup and have a chat with them esp to discuss the brewing parameters. If I recall they use 20g dose with 95 degrees on their machines and 1.5 brew ratio on a LM machine(i might be wrong) for their 4 chairs blend.

Did you disassemble the top burrs to vacuum?

When you single dose, do you weigh more beans than required to compensate for retention? And do you use a stick or brush to clear the chute every time?

Nope didn't disassemble because I think the grounds that are sticking to the walls are more of a permanent feature to the grinder and won't come out of the grind passage. i just grind out all the grounds completely and after that i stick a vacuum hose in the grinder spout and weigh the grounds collected in the vacuum cleaner.

Prior to this, I single dose by putting an unmeasured amount of beans in the grinder about 30g. I purge about 8-10grams, then i grind directly in to the filter basket. Once done I weigh the grounds in the filter basket to make sure its exact. Any left over beans in the grinder (usually only a few) is grinded away and thrown. I think my past experiment was not careful enough to grind away the left over in the burrs....

I'll try purging 2-3g only tomorrow to see if the pour and taste is affected. Anyway I remember a similar discussion on H-B where some people were discussing purging 30grams from a robur to ensure freshness. Eventually some people found that only 4-6gr are retained in the robur so there is no need to purge so much.

Anyway I just cleaned out my grinder with caffeto grinder cleaner and having massive clumping issues. Tried 3 shots with WDT and 3 shots without WDT back to back and all the shots with WDT pours perfectly while those without wdt pours and tastes horrible. I'm a convert. I guess if there are issues with the pour then no harm trying out the WDT.

I know it's the espresso machine thread, but figured this would go with my yet-to-come machine.:)

Have been following this thread of late and intending to join the espresso lovers soon. Unwanted's MO is tempting.

Started out with a Porlex and Aeropress combo, burr carrier wobble wasn't so much a problem since a fine grind worked.

Went to V60 recently and the Porlex struggles, inconsistent grind.

Been tracking OE's Lido/Pharos, but had no inclination to either when on the Aeropress.

Still breaking in on old beans for now. Pretty consistent grind size on coarser settings, figure it will suit the V60 just great.

Experiencing static cling to inside of catch jar, slight grounds retention under burr on the washer/spacer retainer. Included brush takes care of that.

Quite some heft to it. Used to be able to bicycle the Porlex. Not quite so easy with the Lido2. Followed the beta reviewers and braced on hip. Grinds 10 "clicks", recommended middle of the espresso range setting, relatively easily with no noticeable catching. Whirs silent when done, unlike the eccentric rub on the porlex (due to wobble).

Can't wait to get fresh beans from Yahava to try tomorrow!:D

And hopefully, an espresso machine in the future.

I know the Pharos is more suited for that, but heck, I prefer this form factor and price point.

Another home barista is always welcome!!

Holy sh*t I think you're the 1st person in sg to get the Lido2. Yes, holding a 1.5kg hand grinder is no joke.
Please let us know the difference in the cup!:)

wah bro do let us know how is the grind. lido 2 looks very high quality and something i've been eyeing to replace the porlex for office use. I think you are the 1st in SG to get it. THe porlex is quite frustrating for some blends in v60 as the taste can be very bitter due to too many fines.
