I grind with my on demand grinder like 5 to 8 seconds only. That's shag enough.

You need to factor in the time you take out the beans, weigh your beans, put inside, lock it, rotate, take powder out, transfer to portafilter, keep back grinder, clear up and finally seal and put back the unused beans.

100m from destination in the end run 1km. Shag

Rocket is an aussie/italy brand manufacturing mostly semi-commercial machines base on E61.
There are other brands available, like Quickmill, Alex Duetto, ECM, Bezzera, Expobar, etc.

They actually work essentially the same way and quality won't different a lot between each other because the group head and heating system is about the same.
Among them, the popular ones are of course the cheaper ones, that's why you hear a lot of Americans and Aussies like Brewtus and Germans/Italians like Bezzera and Quickmill. ECM Italy had already bankrupt, the new ECM.de used to had their machines manufactured by Bezzera, until it was exposed online.

Bezzera is lesser known among the English although it's the oldest espresso machine company. That is because they don't endorse as sponsors and promote outside Italy until recently.

Brands like Macap, Eureka, Rancilio, La Marzocco and Simonellion on the other hand did extensive sponsorship and got themselves respectable. They held competitions, and the competitions have to use their machines. Thus people tend to believe the machines are of competition standard and are of higher calibre. Which is not necessarily true. I for one don't really appreciate La Marzocco machines despite their marketing.
Rocket is less popular because Brewtus is damn cheap with mass production.
Rocket lost a lot of creditability recently because they refused to correct some of their design flaws. Vendors even terminated themselves as resellers.
I see.
Shall explore other makers then

What can I say except this kind of stuff is very personal. Hand grinders aren't for everyone. What you view as a chore may be perceived as enjoyable by others. Just like our taste in coffee.
Since I'm not running a cafe and I'm making coffee at home for myself, I like to take my own sweet time doing so. Others just want their cup asap I get it. Again there's no wrong or right way, there's only the personal way

my way in telling me what is good for me

spend $50 first on the hario slim, grind for more than 5mins each time than you know what is suitable for you.

You do get a big conical at a great price. 40secs of grinding is nothing considering singaporeans spend more effort in far worthless pursuits eg. hello kitty, 4d, casino, etc
I'm considering buying a large conical grinder just for the fun of trying out the difference between a large conical vs a flat burr.
A hg one, pharos is on my radar together with the versalab m3, compak k10 fresh, mazzer robur or kony. All the motorised grinders are 3k and above....so the hg one looks really tempting now in the absence of the pharos.....

yup this is the famous thread that pushed alot of home users to buy a robur. :s22:It included some analysis of the ground particles. I remember baratza also published particle size analysis of their smaller grinders and it showed very little difference when compared to large conical burrs haha:s13:

This Hario can grind fine enough to match my E61 machine?

Consider buying for fun since it's just $50

<Revised:
Changed my mind.
Heard it takes 5 mins to grind.
By the time i'm done, the aroma oxidised a big % already.

OD Grinder FTW

you can choke your e61 or any espresso machine for that matter with most grinders. The hario certainly can.

anyway this is also quite interesting, using an espresso machine to make a large coffee (long black). By matt perger and mahlkonig.

Mahlkönig Releases The Definitive “Coffee Shot 101″ User Guide

While matt perger did some tests to show superior extraction yields with the mahlkonig ek43 i think its good to remember that his face is on almost every ad for the ek43.

Haha thanks for the info! 2 left! Yay!

Actually the Titan project to beat mazzer in a way find other grinder like cimballi max, compak k10wbc, mcap mxk to yield better taste. However I think it's best to take those reviews with a pinch of salt as coffee taste is subjective. If these were tested by Singaporean tastebuds, May be it's possibly more "relevant" to us. (They didn't have international tastebud in their test setup.):s13:
