GPU at factory settings causing screen blackouts during game.

Hi all, I recently got a new GPU, but at stock settings it's causing the screen to go black during gaming sessions every now and then. When I undervolt it to 0.818V and capped the clock speed to around 1800mhz it seems a lot more stable. Now I'm running it at 0.781V and 1725mhz and the blackout is pretty much gone(hasn't encountered any).

Just wondering if it is the GPU faulty or is it just a case of not enough power? I know 650w is barely acceptable for a 3080w and was wondering if that could be the case.

How old is that 650w? Best to test with another psu. If using custom cables, switch back to stock cables

No custom cables. PSU is only a year old, unfortunately I don't have a suitable psu to test, my other pc is using a 520w seasonic s12.

I figured my rig should be able to handle 3080 since the 3700x peaks at 150w and I didn't overclock it. The MSI card seems to have a cap at 320w so it should still have some headroom left, but that's just my opinion lah.

Anyway at 0.781v it seems to reach a max of about 65% tdp 200-220w.

If its the Seasonic Focus you are using, then it is possible the problem may be due to the PSU. But try and see if you can test it with another PSU before concluding to avoid wasting your money if you end up getting another.

It is not about the wattage output, but because of the transient power required by all these high power GPU that will cause problem if the PSU is not capable of managing.

can try set to lower resolution 4k -> 2k, and bios set to pcie3.
Use 3dMark to stress test... and see how long it can go...

Just because it is an MSI GPU does not automatically mean that its from Corbell though. There's been a lot of MSI RTX 3080 that are from Amazon or Newegg of late.

But I agree that may be the next best thing to do is to bring it to a shop to isolate the issue since most of us don't keep expensive spare parts for testing.

Use 3dMark to stress test... and see how long it can go...

What can I do if the problem is with PSU, it's not technically a defect right? Just not enough power? I can live with undervolting/underclocking the card for now if it's a stable long term solution.

It is not a defect, but it is not up to specs to keep up with the requirements from the RTX 3080. If you tested and confirm it is the PSU, then your only option is to get a new PSU that is 750W or higher in wattage. Just read up in case the PSU you are planning to get cannot make the mark to support a RTX 3080 as well.

Even though you're right, your post isn't exactly helpful. I'm trying to figure out whether the problem is with the card or PSU.

As of now my RTX 3080 is drawing less power than my RX 5700XT, which ran fine for a whole year. I still got a couple black screens for a few seconds when I boot up my PC.

The driver you mean is the Nvidia driver? How about your card firmware?

Just to highlight sometime latest Nvidia driver might not be stable for certain game and it would result in game crash to desktop.

You may want to check online for more comment on the latest Nvidia driver and sometimes rollback a version earlier or using studio driver might solve the issue of game crash and display flickering.

You may also want to consider using DDU to uninstall driver and refresh driver installation to check if more stable since you mentioned you converted from amd gpu to Nvidia gpu.

When you say black screen, u meant the psu cut off itself right? The whole system shutdown and not just the gpu?

Rtx 3080 is known for having transient spikes in power consumption, meaning even if the tdp is 320w or whatever, it is possible for a few milliseconds that it draws in more than 400-450w of power, in addition to the power consumption of ur other parts of the system. What happens then is that ur psu overcurrent protection kicks in and shut itself down to protect ur system. PSUs are suppose to be able to handle this short burst of power spike actually since its a normal stuff that a system does but sometimes the protection is too sensitive.

So what you can do is try to ask the psu manufacturer or distro for advice, its a known issue by now with rtx 3000s and see what they can do. There are reports where they replaced such users with updated models of psu without an oversensitive ocp. Or just get a new psu, preferably higher one so future upgrade u wont face the same issue again.

Nope, literally just black screen. Everything else running as per normal. Audio working ok and from the audio cues, I can still move around, shoot etc in game.

I DDU-ed my AMD drivers and shutdown before putting in the new card. Then I straightaway download the latest nvidia driver and installed that. To be safe, I DDU-ed the nvidia driver again last night and reinstalled.
