Grab moves into retail wealth management with acquisition of robo-advisory
PUBLISHED FEB 4, 2020, 9:00 AM SGT

SINGAPORE (THE BUSINESS TIMES) - Grab has made its move into the retail wealth management space with its acquisition of Bento Invest, a Singapore-based robo-advisory startup for an undisclosed sum.

This will allow Grab to offer retail wealth management and investment solutions to its ecosystem of users, drivers and merchants via its app.

Following the acquisition, Bento will be rebranded as GrabInvest, with products expected to be launched on the Grab app in the first half of the year in Singapore. They will eventually be rolled out to other markets in South-east Asia.

GrabInvest aims to offer cash management and portfolio-based financial solutions and will operate under a retail wealth management capital markets services licence by the Monetary Authority of Singapore. It intends to adopt a low-cost model with full disclosures on fees, using a platform that users are familiar with.

GrabInvest will be the fifth vertical under Grab's financial services arm, Grab Financial Group, and will be led by Bento's founder and CEO Chandrima Das.

Other verticals under Grab Financial Group include payments (GrabPay), rewards (GrabRewards), lending (GrabFinance) and insurance (GrabInsure).

Reuben Lai, senior managing director of Grab Financial Group, noted that there is a lack of access to affordable wealth management products and retirement planning solutions for most people.

"The launch of GrabInvest brings us a step closer to democratising access to affordable financial solutions that will help them achieve the financial stability they need well into their retirement years," he said.

Ms Das, who will also be Grab Financial Group's new head of wealth management, pointed out that their common vision is to make investments accessible for customers "irrespective of their wallet size".

Bento's proprietary digital wealth platform includes client onboarding, and portfolio construction and rebalancing supported by robust risk management capabilities. Its team of 12, including Ms Das, will join GrabInvest.

Ms Das has over two decades of leadership experience in banks and asset managers across Asia and the UK. She was formerly managing director at Bank of Singapore and prior to that, CEO of ING Investment Management.

Grab to launch retail investment product, consumer loans platform
WED, AUG 05, 2020 - 5:50 AM

GRAB'S financial services arm, Grab Financial Group (GFG), is rolling out a micro-investment product and a third-party loan platform for its users. This follows the digibank-aspirant's suite of merchant financial services, launched last year.

The investment product, called AutoInvest, will allow users to invest sums as low as S$1 while spending in Grab's ecosystem. This comes after Grab announced the acquisition of Singapore-based robo-advisory startup Bento in February, which allows the group to offer retail wealth management solutions.

Users in Singapore choose how much they want to invest additionally per Grab transaction. The money is invested into fixed income funds offered by Fullerton Fund Management and UOB Asset Management.

The returns of an estimated 1.8 per cent per annum will be cashed out to the user's GrabPay wallet, which allows the money to stay within Grab's ecosystem. The company is exploring a feature that lets users cash out from their GrabPay wallet to their bank account in future.

Fees charged by managers of the underlying funds will be reflected in the user's in-app portfolio performance; these fees will work out to less than 0.45 per cent per annum. Grab takes a cut of the fund fees.

Zennon Kapron, director of fintech consultancy Kapronasia, said that the nearly instant liquidity and minimum investment are attractive features.

"But the returns are still within the range of a typical Singapore bank's deposit interest rate, so from that angle, it's not as attractive yet. If they are able to widen the range of products to include those with a higher return, it could get very interesting," he said.

The invested sum can be withdrawn at any time, with no penalties, to spend on Grab services or at any merchant accepting the GrabPay Card. Grab does not charge any transaction fees for investing in the AutoInvest solution.

AutoInvest, which will be launched in early September, is not capital guaranteed.

Why can’t I see the ‘Invest’ icon in my Grab App?
Thank you for your interest in GrabInvest! Please ensure that you have updated to the latest version of the Grab app.

This feature may not be available to you just yet. As we’re progressively rolling it out to all users, you’ll be able to find us on the homepage of your Grab app once it’s made available to you.

Just looks like a Stashaway Simple/Endowus Cash Smart type of thing, but need to go through more hoops because of the forced integration with GrabPay.

I'm only doing so just bcos I've got spare balance otherwise I wouldn't purposefully top up my account just to put into the invest scheme.

How does it work actually? Does it work like a bond? When can you see your returns? Are we able to get back our principal sum in future? :s11:

The whole idea is stupid, you need to topup your Grabpay wallet, pay for something using Grabpay like grabcar or grabfood and Grab will deduct either $1, $5 or $10 from your Grabpay wallet on top of your spending to invest the $1 or $5 or $10...

If you tell me that grab will sweep small change like you pay for grabfood for $17.20 and grab deduct $18 and invest the $0.80, it would have been better...

No option for lump sum or no option to withdraw other than trapping it to your Grabpay wallet, don't think anyone will sign up...But there are alot of stupid people around so you never know...

I do agree that it's suboptimal. Should just give people the option to invest any amount they want rather than tying it to grab transactions. And the returns are not particularly attractive as well for something that is not principal protected.

But maybe a viable option for those who have frontloaded their grab wallet and sitting on a big balance, but then again, have to clock grab transactions just to deploy the funds, which is silly...

Show me where I advocate Robo Investing? I only supported buying using POSB Invest Saver or FSM RSP which are not robo investing...

Only valid for folks with significant amount of money in the wallet already. Does not make sense to top up just to do this.

Those with Amex TCB, somehow you can get back 1.5% more return if u get what i mean. Since you need to top up to ur wallet to have value to invest. Normally u need cash to invest with no cashback. If you guys get what i mean haha.
