GTX 980 and 290x which one better eh?

average speaking,
gtx980 can overclock up to 1.3ghz core can come close to dual gpu titan-z/295x
290x can overclock up to 1.1ghz core

gtx980 is much better but local prices are chop carrot head again.

Poorly performing for a next generation card.

Looks like the "real" maxwell will be out in Nov with the GM200 Titan 2 :s13:

My dear it is a 2nd tier SKU beating a top tier SKU on the same silicon node for less power some more. Wake up your idea please. :s22:

Yeah, with such lousy trash from Nvidia, AMD don't even need to work hard to compete.....

Nvidia really is crap......Only idiots will buy Nvidia cards.

Yeah meanwhile some others are grilling steak with their Hawaii cards.

Seems like 970 more worth it for its price:performance ratio, as compared to 980...

Top tier sku on the previous gen... The upcoming titan 2 on gm200 or 980 ti will beat this 980 by 30-50%

Yep.. think most of the people 'disappointed' with the new Maxwell releases are probably those who only recently spent big bucks on the latest, super-hot AMD cards that are now obsolete in cost, performance AND heat.. :s22::s22:

I don't get it, shouldn't the "successor" to the gtx780 be called gtx880 rather than gtx980? And hot damn it's slower than what it replaces! If i read HWZ's review correctly.. Power efficiency? People who buy GPUs for hardcore gaming only look at the Fraps counter, not the power draw or temperature readings.

It's already been announced that the 800 series were only on mobile platform. Hwz review differs from other review sites. Check them out.

Lower power consumption have a higher possibility of overclocking better. Less heat means less noise which also means lesser cooling needed. Lesser power consumption means cheaper lower wattage psus which means that money can be used elsewhere or a better tier card.

It's not only about the electricity bill in the end.

Myth. With nvidia's voltage lock on most cards the limiting factor is not tdp which we can unlock with bios flashes but rather gpu vcore
