In 1325, the Italian city-states of Bologna and Modena went to war… over a wooden bucket.
Modenese soldiers had snuck into Bologna and stolen an ordinary oak pail from a city well. It wasn’t sacred. It wasn’t symbolic. It was just… a bucket. But Bologna’s pride was wounded, and they demanded it back.
Modena refused.
So Bologna declared war.
They raised an army of 30,000 infantry and 2,000 cavalry to crush Modena’s measly 5,000 men.
But here’s the twist—Modena won.
They sent Bologna’s army running, chased them all the way home, wrecked their infrastructure, and then instead of sieging the city… stole a second bucket. Just for fun.
