Noob question: difference between topcoat and flat coat?

Topcoat can either be matte (flat), semi-gloss or gloss coats. The difference is in their finishing varying between matte and gloss. For matte, it'll usually appear duller and removes that plastic look while glossy gives a shiny, smooth reflective finish if done right.

The basics is that the topcoat layer alters the surface roughness of the kit with matte being really rough to defract more light whereas gloss is smooth, reflecting more. Colors appear to change after topcoat because of this phenomenon.

I want to top coat my rg freedom after its finished. Top coat part by part, section by section or whole model at once? I heard that do a topcoat before putting on foil stickers. Then do another one after. Share with me how you guys do it?
