Hi guys. I'm a complete newbie here. Long time ago in primary school I used to play with air fix but I was horrible at painting and gluing. Now I feel like building again, maybe gundam. Do the kits need to paint and glue? From the box it looks like the pieces are already colored.

The gundam kits can be built right out of the box without glue. U check out most gundam kits at ´Þ·ÕÀÌÀÇ °ÇÇÃ¶ó ¸®ºä whereby the owner just panel line it without painting.

But if you want to make it more nice, then can add paint to it.

nowadays, RG dont even need to paint to look good man. It looks so good on its own already.

I agreed - I feel even sam decal is not needed too. IMHO, original decal look better than sam decal but only look common compare to another same kit.

Thanks guys. I bought a cheap AG gundam set to play play over the weekend. It was very easy but fun to build. I also tried painting it using acrylic paint I bought from art friend, but it was very difficult because the paint wouldn't stick. Anyway, although the results look horrible I quite enjoyed myself.

Anyways, I've done quite a bit of online reading and learnt a lot about primers and handpainting. I'm going to strip off the paint on the same set and try again with proper Tamiya paint and primer.

For future painting practice, do you think it's reasonable for me to just stick with AG models? I don't think I will ever buy an airbrush or spray paint, because of no space in my small HDB flat. Do the larger HG/MG models require airbrush?

yep, rg kits are very nice even without painting. I can never get tired of seeing completed rg kits

for the paint not sticking, it could be coz u over diluted the paint.

it will also be easier to stick if u spray on a layer of primer first. another way is to use fine sandpaper to make the surface more rough before painting.

any kit will do, as long as u like the kit. larger kits 1/100 and above are harder to handpaint due to larger surface, which makes it more obvious when there are brush stroke marks. however, they are still doable. or u can get a spray can for the larger surface, and handpaint the rest

Noob question here. I tried hand painting a relatively large piece yesterday and it ended up looking quite ugly with the brush strokes very visible. I did about 3-4 coats but I think I didn’t dilute the paint enough.

I’m considering buying a spray can to redo the piece. Do I need to strip off the paint I did yesterday before spraying?

2nd question - I bought a bottle of Gunze Mr Base White primer. I handpainted it on pieces that I was going to paint, but I'm not sure how much thinner to use with the primer. Should it go on thickly or thinly? How many coats of primer to apply? Should I apply until the piece is completely white?

another reason for stripping the paint is so that the layer do not become too thick. u may have problem fitting the piece if u have too many layers on paint on it.

Finally my kits has arrived! The Genkiryujin and Agama! Finally I can start on them! Yuppies!

Btw, I find that kotobukiya kits is good even with just hand painted and panel lining.

Guys I just started on this hobby. Got a few questions. Is there a good place in the west to buy tools and paints like top coat etc? Also any reccomended shop which sells some third party kits? Only know of hobby mate but they mainly sell MC model

if u just started on this hobby, u may want to stick to bandai kits. third party kits are a lot harder to do due to misalignment of parts and parts that dun fit, and will require a lot of puttying and modification to get the kit right.
among the third party kits, MC is probably the best already. the other, such as tongli totally cannot make it.

nearest hobby shop is probably hobby point at tiong bahru plaza level 5 (need to take lift up). some of the tools can be bought from hardware shops (sandpaper) or daiso (cutting mat, art knife) instead
