I was thinking of getting some dragon momoko kits after reading their good reviews but yeah I will first start with a few HG bandai kits. For painting, can I use those available from neighborhood hardware store like Nippon spray paint? Or is there any reccomended brand for those available in hardware store

Hi guys,

I have a NG gunpla model, now I want to paint the shield. As this is a cheap kit, the shield comes in one piece only.

The shield is mostly dark blue, with a yellow vertical stripe in the middle and white trim all round.

I intend to handpaint the yellow and white parts, and spray the blue. Is this the correct sequence?

1. Spray White primer
2. Mask off the white and yellow areas on the shield
3. spray the shield blue
4. handpaint the white and yellow areas

i am not very familiar with spray paint coz i mostly do handpainting or airbrush.

but those from hardware store are usually thicker and not as easy to control as those hobby ones such as tamiya or mr color. u could try on unwanted parts or plastics spoon, to get a feel on using these spray cans

steps are ok.

but i would do handpaint after priming.

1. Spray White primer
2. handpaint the white and yellow areas
3. Mask off the white and yellow areas on the shield
4. spray the shield blue

since white and yellow are light colors, it can be covered up by the dark blue. so if there is any mistake when handpainting and the white or yellow paint got onto the dark blue area, it can still be covered up.

Ah that makes more sense. So the first time I paint the white and yellow parts, I don't need to mask off. I just mask off before I spray the blue part. Less work!

I have another question - I read that there is such thing as a gundam eraser marker that we can use to clean up paint mistakes. I don't understand how that works. Lets say I didn't mask properly and some of the blue spray paint got into the yellow part of the shield. If I use the eraser marker to rub off the excess blue, wouldn't it rub off the yellow underneath that as well?

For painting the entire gundam you also do by hand? Won't be time consuming?

yup, but mine is mostly HG and SD, so not so bad.

Haven't started on any kits yet but went daiso today to get some tools, scalpel, filer, buffer and nippers. Going down to hobby art on Monday to get my first hg kit. Hope I can find one decent one below 30..
