Hard disk problem

Just bought a Toshiba 3.5" 2Tb just hours ago to use as secondary storage. I tried to transfer a file to this new drive but the transfer speed from 15mb/s drop to 2.5Mb/s then it will hang. After a while the hard drive is not detected in my computer but is able to detect in bios. I have already change sata slots and sata cables but nothing works. Is it possible for a new hard disk to fail?

Bought from tradepac and it was in a moisture barrier bag so it should be a new one. Got no other pc to test. I used Hd tune to scan also hang and it shows ZZZZZZ as model type.

Dead on arrival HDD. Be thankful it died with no data on it.

Within 7 days can 1 to 1 exchange no? Lemon law applies.

Amazon got alot of bad review of Toshiba drives being dead on arrival. Is this why they are so cheap ?

sounds more like a bios/mounting problem

anyway i bought the same drive from tradepac last week

plug in 7 year old com (sb710 chipset) on port 5 with 4 other drives, ahci cannot detect, ide can detect. switched sata ports around to test, found that somehow bios can only detect hdd on sata 1 to 3 on ahci. so left it on port 5 with ahci and go windows see how.

go device manager, the drive is there.

go disk management, it's listed. so initialized using mbr (bios better not use gpt), format and mount. after backing up ~250gb of data, did a full check and scan. no errors no bad sectors.

so far so good, though reviews say will fail in 2 years after warranty ends.

anyway, before claiming the drive is broken,
1. make sure there's sufficient power (some ppl daisy chain 4 drives to 1 cable)
2. see if it's detected in bios/uefi/windows. try it as a primary drive on port1
3. check device status
4. initialize, format and mount before testing/using
