Looking at Orico 4-bay docking stations or other similar brands. Is it advisable to pay double the price for an enclosed docking station? Both runs with USB3 connection. Any other recommended ones?

Are you using for temporary access or you want it like a permanent storage (i.e. like a portable hdd storage) ? Temporary access its fine for non-enclosed, if you're going to do a permanent one (like a DAS, Direct Attached Storage), those enclosed ones are safer I suppose.

I have a separate NAS for my main backup. This one is for secondary and frequently accessed files and projects. I think the fan will help to prolong the lifespan a bit as my place is dusty.

Thanks. So far their products are quite good.

I bought the 5-bay enclosure (up to 50TB) USB version for around US$150 from Aliexpress with free premium shipping direct from Orico.

I haven't unbox the unit to use it yet. :o

Do try and share your comments here. One thing I dont like is the HDD is stacked horizontally. If it's vertical like Synology, it might have better heat dissipation.

Problem with NAS (or RAID box) is some brand may be hardware dependant. Eg. My friend has a Lenovo one (ex IOMega). When you have a bad logic board. Taking out the disk and transfer to another NAS or PC and you still unable to access your data.
If you send back to agent. Chance is they will tell you the model is end life and they dont have spare part to repair. This also means you are unlikely to get your data back easily.

So do be fool by these consumer level product. You are probably not protect after some years even you are willing to pay for the repair.

True. I am sticking with Synology for my primary data. Anything goes wrong can buy a similar one.

This one way too big. Maximum is synology/orico size, just nice for 4-5 hdds. Secondary backup no need to go for raid, just plain vanilla.

No lah. I recommend an alternative where the PC casing comes with hot-swappable drives, AT THE FRONT somemore. It’s in my bag I guess 🤗
