Get him to try the white filter. That will make it brighter, which typically seems clearer. More energy for the high notes. It may sound a bit edgy and sharp- if so try a better source like the Chord Hugo. The 846 is considered a TOTL IEM, but the Samsung is not a top source- so he may get better bang for the buck by upgrading his source.
Anyway, try the two IEMs I suggested first, especially the VisionEars Stage 6. It sounds crystal clear, but it's not warm. The JH13 is also clear, but has a smaller soundstage and is less airy. The JH13 sounds more similar to the Shure 846, if that's what he likes.
He can also try Fitear, but Fitear and the 846 sound totally different. Fans of the Fitear don't like the 846, and vice versa. The Fitear has textured, detailed bass with warmth; the 846 has fast, clean bass without much warmth.
The Noble K10 is a good 'middle ground' that has a bit more warmth than the 846, but its strengths are a very smooth sound with great extension and detail- not crystal clarity.
Thanks a lot for the detailed analysis!
I guess I will get my friend to audition the fitear, vision ear and Jh 13 at jaben first.
Where can we audition Dita though? I have never heard of this brand before.
And side track a little other than AK120 and 240, are then other DAPs that to good to pair with K10 level of iems? I have tried zx1 and i found that i was quite good.
