[Help] Budget NAS build.

Cool! I was just wondering how is the size compared to the Lian Li PC Q25 and below is the comparison.

I'm elated to know that the U-Nas from taobao is smaller... but found out that the size for the PSU (1U Flex) is rather "uncommon". Finding replacement would be hard, no?

FSP has quite a good reputation in power supply and for NAS, you are not running at close to full load at 24/7. therefore power supply should be the last to go. Rather it is those HDD that need to be replaced the soonest compared to the rest of the parts.

I have this rig since 2014 and the first failure came from the Seagate HDD.

Even if this PSU is going to be RMA, Tech Dynamics carry FSP brand and it is quite simple to replace it.

Looked at the Silverstone and the all plastic construction was such a put off considering the price.

InWin was a contender till I realized that it cost almost $280 from Newegg and almost $180 from TaoBao before shipping.

U-Nas seems to only have 4-bays on TaoBao. At the right price definitely a contender. U-Nas-400 is listed for about $140 and the newer U-Nas-410 goes for about $155. My Chinese isn't good enough to figure out what's the difference between the two and my limited experience with TaoBao means I have no idea what shipping work out to be.



What's the item cost/shipping price breakdown for your U-Nas N-400? Do you know what's the difference between the N-400/NSC-410 versions?

Where did you get that FSP Flex Gold PSU and how much you pay for it? I only found a bronze being sold by t258jgn.

Still toying with the idea of using a PicoPSU. Heard it improves temp/noise/power draw/space but never built with one before so a little hazy on specifics. Anyone here experienced with PicoPSUs? Tried contacting the guy that used to sell those here (goes by the name Minisupply10) but he seems to have vanished.

in 2014, i got it for around $110 without shipping. That is for NSC-400.

The difference between 410 and 400 is that there is a expansion opening for your PCIE card.
As i need to add in additional Lan card for higher network thoughput, i did some modification to the back panel.
Right now it is already cater in the NSC-410 model.

for flex-atx psu, either cybermind or Pc themes do carry these PSU. if not you can indent through them to the distributor, Tech Dynamics. I do see these around in SLS whenever I am down there.

And I also got the psu from t258jgn last time. I believe he does not has any stock at this moment.

I suggest that you get the psu from the distributor and in case of any RMA, it is under local warranty.

Wah steep. But worth it since the casing is “one of a kind” that allows alot of drive bays and allows the usage of normal regular sized PSU.

Anw price is MSRP, but how much they want to price it? I think cheaper to get from newegg. Last i check was $180-ish incl shipping.

Q25 pros: Reasonably small for 6bays. Solid construction. Hot swap.

Q25 cons: Expensive. Have to actually open the side panel to access the hot swap which is like.. HUH?!

I'm seriously leaning towards the generic TaoBao 6-bay case right now. But I had some reviews to refer to before I commit. Not cash flush enough to throw away money playing tech pioneer. Heh.

Its 5 hotswap bays via sliding rails
3 slide click drives at the bottom YOu screw in the screws+washer to the hard drives. Then slide them onto the tray below via the holes.

All of the above don't need to screw or unscrew stuff once nicely setup.

The side panel also don't need to screw or unscrew stuff to open coz it closes via a latch
Its a premium case for a reason.
To open it, just pull the tab to pry the side panel open.
Closing the side panel is simply aligning and gently slaping it close.

Personally for myself, i am avoiding stuff that uses SECC steel whenever possible
coz after a few years, the looks will make me want to change the casing. zzz

I end up deciding to just using Fractal Design Node 304 for casing because I was trying to lower the overall costs. The Lian Li is perfect but a little too steep for me at the moment. But it is definitely an upgrade option ( ppl upgrade storage, I upgrade casing )

I have just pulled the trigger on the J3455-ITX yesterday night and opted for Newegg Eggsaver Express shipping (what a name...) And as i was typing this out, juuuust I received an sms saying Fedex have scheduled for a delivery on the 20th Nov, im sure thats from newegg.

The rest of the parts I’ll get from Sim Lim.

We’ve been talking about the ASRock J3455-ITX previously. We have a poster here that have that system since a while back and seems like he’s really happy with it. As for the other one, im not too sure how it performs. U should be able to compare them using benchmarks online.

Whole point of hot swap is to not interrupt operation. I rather not have to mess with side panel removal/replacement to get to the hot swap drives.
