Hi, I need a PC for Solidworks, video editing, some gaming and normal surfing with a budget of 3k excluding monitor. Might look into a 32inch or 34inch monitor. Below are some of my findings and appreciate if anyone can feedback.

CPU : Intel I7-6700K
MOBO : Asus z170 Pro
GPU : Asus Strix GTX970 OC
RAM : G.Skill Ripjaw V PC3200 16gb
HDD : Samsung 850 pro 512gb
Case : Corsair air 540
OS : Windows 10 home
CPU : Cooling Corsair H110I
PSU : CM V750 (reuse)

of cos if can go lower but then still can serve my purpose that would be great. Currently thinking of getting 32inch monitor. If I can save more then will consider 34inch

might be better off with a X99 + 980Ti/Fury? At 32"/34" gtx 970 may not make the cut.

Also how old is your power supply?

Here's my recommendation:
From PCT:
5820K + MSI X99A SLI PLUS - 941
G.SKILL RIPJAWS 4 2400MHZ CL15 ( 4GBx4pcs ) - 209 [can buy from amazon for cheaper price]
SAPPHIRE R9 FURY 4GB TRI-X - 819
SF LEADEX 650w PLATINUM F.MOD - 169 [Leadex Silver currently oos, if not can consider Leadex Silver @ 129 instead]
CORSAIR H100i GTX CPU COOLER - 179
CORSAIR 540 AIRFLOW CASE - 195 [not the best case to use, prefer Fractal/Phanteks @ 169]

Lazada:
http://www.lazada.sg/zotac-480gb-25-premium-ssd-phison-s10-toshiba-mlc-2420939.html ZOTAC 480GB 2.5" Premium SSD (Phison S10 + Toshiba MLC) - 229

Windows from reddit @ 35 USD ~ 50 SGD

Thanks for the recommendation. My PSU bought last year sept to replace my faulty psu. I try to stick to nvidia as adobe premiere pro and solidworks will support, although AMD cards are cheaper.

I am also not very pro on mobo+cpu. The mobo+cpu i chose is cheaper than your suggested combo. May i kno2 the difference?

This cpu is a 6 core CPU which may (or may not) help you in your rendering/editing.

You can still go for nvidia which in this case, possibly a 980Ti? 970/980 would be too weak

I think I am set towards X99 + 5820k. Mobo wise I thinking if should get Asus X99-A or the sabertooth. Will OC it to 4.2 ~ 4.5ghz. 980TI will be quite expensive and eat up bulk of the budget. Having 970 SLI is it better?

Also considering m.2 HDD. Will it help alot if use for OS?

Yes that cpu will be good for your rendering/video editing work. As for mobo you won't have to get the more expensive one unless you are going to aesthetic. Getting a single 980Ti will be much getting 970 SLI.

3K is more than enough to go Core i7 hexa core CPU + GTX 980 Ti...

I set a budget base on my limit, but of course if can save money or actually if need not use so high-end hardware to achieve the same job/task, then I would not want to throw money also. :s13:

Abit noob towards Mobo. I thought Asus will be a slightly better brand and also easier for OC? Thanks for the reply

oc more chip dependent than board dependent.

While the M.2 NVME SSD is blazing fast, I don't think the experience you get from it will be lightyears apart from a standard sata ssd

Don't forget that if you intend to oc, you have to account for the additional heat. Which means maybe replacing stock fans or adding water cooling maybe

OIC ok. I used to have MSI boards but seems giving me alot of problems in the past. ASUS seems to be picking up in reliability. MSI X99A and ASUS X99-A price not very far apart.

Thanks for the pre-amp. Yup will be getting the AIO H100 or H110I. Wanted to go into custom WC, but its quite expensive and time consuming to setup + maintain.

For X99 platform, so far MSI no problems. On the other hand, Asus has been giving problems, particular the Asus X99 Deluxe. Some Deluxe users had experienced CPU chip fried due to bad Asus BIOS revisions.

And the difference between the cheapest MSI X99 and Asus X99 board locally is quite significant. Paired with Intel i7-5820k, MSI X99A SLI PLUS costs S$941 while Asus X99-A costs S$1025 (prices taken from PC Themes pricelist). So that's something u might wanna consider about, whether u wanna fork out more money for branding, considering both mobos are the lowest-tier X99 boards offered by both brands, so actual board features should not differ by much.

Having an NVMe SSD such as Intel 750 or Samsung 950 Pro will make a lot of difference when TS needs to work with Solidworks and video editing programs like Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects. The scrubbing through of footage will be faster during video editing, making it easier to work with crazy 4k footage or multiple 1080p footage layers.

For gaming and general web browsing, NVMe SSD will still be faster than regular SATA3 SSD, but the impact is not as great as during video editing and 3D modelling.

Ya I did read that due to Asus over voltage that fried their chips. Your setup seems to be dealing with video editing too? Your MSI board is a higher range I suspose, don't really see it on most shop's price list. I seldom upgrade PC, thats why if need to spend that extra $100, I will just go for it.

Yups. Mine is a multi-purpose rig. Photo/video/audio editing, gaming, networking, hackintosh, general usage, etc.

For mine, I purposely went all the way to ask Corbell to indent this motherboard last September. Only 2 pieces were brought in. And it's one of the highest end X99 boards MSI has. So it's 'limited edition' piece for me haha. :)

But due to much lower local demand for high-end desktop (HEDT) mobos over mainstream ones, X99 boards can be considered rare locally. In SLS, lower-tier X99 boards like the MSI SLI PLUS and SLI Krait can still be found off the shelves, though like only 1-2 pieces that kind. Other more exotic X99 motherboard need to get distro (Corbell for MSI and Ban Leong for Asus) to indent. If I remember correctly, my last trip down to SLS I can still spot an MSI SLI PLUS in Fuwell and MSI SLI Krait in PC Themes. The Asus X99-A does not seem to be displayed on the shelves, only the more popular X99-Deluxe. So local stocks for the Asus X99-A might be a problem, if u still want the Asus X99 boards.
