Yup just realised both Windows 8 and 10 OEM and retail using cheapo 'minimalism' cardboxes... :s22:

Well, the one I got is not even in a DVD Jewel Box. However, I didn't know its OEM since I don't even know how the packaging looks like.

The Hitachi 4TB HDD I bought on that day also comes without a box, just enclosed in an anti static wrapper. Do I have to check whether its second hand now?

Iirc, most shops selling hdd will have the hdd wrapped in anti static bag, instead of retail box....

I think you are being too anal bah... all is working fine, just use it.

You first time buying oem parts? I worked at sea gate last time, all their hdd are packed in anti static bag one, never see retail box for hdd before. You want to know second hand or not, just go check hdd life span using software. Can see if it is second hand or not.

OEM or retail, doesnt matter in real-life situtions, since unlike Windows 7 and earlier versions, u dun need to reinstall from CD to factory reset, Windows 10 already comes with factory reset options. So technically the CD is a one-time off install and OEM or retail, u prob wont need it again until 6-8 years later or when u change to a new motherboard (Win10 is still detected even when u swap motherboard through RMA - as long as same model of motherboard).

As for HDD packaging, I only noe WD provides the packaging, but it's also nothing more than the cardboard packaging found with ur Win10 OEM CD. Hitachi and Seagate dun have such packaging.

Oh by the way some days back, on HWZ, a forumer provided info that when we buy say, 8.1 Pro key, we can actually use WIN10 Pro iso and install and the key will work.

Anyone tried before? Cause I'm installing this weekend. Hope it'll work to save me some time to do 8.1 to 10.
I'm not too sure about that. Maybe you want to try that?

Think quite impossible if you ever called and speak to Microsoft before. seems like has to stick with OEM or buy another retail.

Hm... I was under the impression that Retail is more worth it for Windows 10 since they are not going to upgrade the version number anymore. There will be service packs and other changes along the way, but I should be able to retain the retail license. I'm looking at retaining the license for at least 6 - 8 years, which I'll definitely be changing my hardware by then.

Even retail version has its limitation.

From my personal experience, I bought retail WIN7 few years back. Within 2-3 years, I've changed like mobo 2-3 times. SDD several times. Keep using the same retail key.

Until 1 fine day the key cannot work anymore. So I called up MS and they said they cannot do anything anymore as my key had been used to activate several times.

IIRC, the CS said even retail version can be used to activate only 4-5 times. I tried to argue but in the end sua lah, just go buy an OEM key.

If I remember correctly, retail's automated activation only 5 times. On the 6th time onwards, need to do manual phone activation (i.e. call MS phone activation service). If u try calling Microsoft's customer service (i.e. speak to operator instead of phone activation), high chance u will get the reply u just described.

There's no need buy another key when you change PC. Can just give microsoft a call to change key to the "new" motherboard.

I did it for mine a few months back.

Bro, legal to use mah?

Cheap leh, going to get win 10 pro
Keys are legal but just sold in unintended way from Microsoft. You should read through buyers' review first before you buy since some mentioned Microsoft deactivating keys...

I don't regret buying OEM window 8.1. I use it to reformat my com, my sibling's com, my friends new computer, etc for more than 10 times.
Help my friend save $100+ on OS.

Totally worth it.

It comes with some cheap looking envelop like packaging.

The annoying thing is it will keep popping out message telling you to key in a new CD key but you can totally ignore it.

More accurately, the keys are technically valid but illegally sold. :s7:
