So about 50km a week? Seems too much?

I'm a bit old liao... Too much cardio will increase cortisol and bad for me.

Recent months jogged 8 to 10 km every weekend. Got some indoor cycling and bodyweight/dumbells training on 2 or 3 weekdays. Only raised hdl but not decrease ldl.
It works for me. But no need run 10km each time. Maybe 5km still ok. Main thing is to do it regularly. I ran 3 days rest 1 day.

The knee joints can handle 10-20 kilometers per week of jogging without significant long-term damage, and have to be done with proper form and on softer surfaces. Exceeding this and over the years, could increase the risk of joint wear.

I can't change my diet so I requested for statin and it lowered my cholesterol. Took the easy way out. Some said cholesterol is not necessary due to diet but our liver is also producing them.

Many years ago I did a successful weight loss and cut all the carb n snacks but really..those diet is hard to maintain in the run long but they did maintain my cholesterol to healthy level.

my family doc said to increase HDL is by exercising, to decrease LDL is need to control diet.
A good HDL can help to reduce LDL aslo.
Thats why i tool plant sterols, fatty fish combined by indoor cycling. Also went on a diet to reduce weight.....

I remembered getting 3 highs during my bi-annual checkups. I was 80kg. Started jogging regularly and on my next checkup all tests improved. Subsequently another checkup 6 months later all results showed healthy levels. My weight dropped to 60kg.

I only did jogging. No change in diet. Glad it works for me. I'm almost 50 yo now.

Really? Mine just nice around 10 to 20 km per week. Will bear in mind not to exceed.

Just did a health check and cholesterol numbers are:
- Total Cholesterol: 252 mg/dL
- HDL Cholesterol: 51 mg/dL
- LDL Cholesterol: 182 mg/dL
- TC/HDL Ratio: 4.95
- Triglycerides: 95 mg/dL

Need to start taking meds? Any other advice?
What's your age?

Any medical history of diabetes, hypertension etc?

Think you need to do quite a bit of reading up on cholesterol and why numbers are "high" sometimes

From a non-medical reading - HDL does seem a bit on the low side

But triglycerides are still okay under 100 mg/dl

Anyway, it is not meaningful to look at absolute numbers - instead, ratios are a better indicator

Total cholesterol HDL ratio = total cholesterol ÷ HDL

To obtain their total cholesterol HDL ratio, a person can divide their total cholesterol level by their HDL level. Generally, higher ratios relate to a higher risk of health problems, such as heart disease.
For example: 240 (total cholesterol) ÷ 60 (HDL) = 4 (total cholesterol HDL ratio).
Health experts designate the following total cholesterol HDL ratios as follows:
  • ideal: under 3.5
  • good: under 5
  • bad: over 5

LDL-HDL ratio = LDL ÷ HDL

People can work out their LDL-HDL ratio by dividing their LDL level by their HDL level. This ratio is one of the most popular measures to see a person’s risk of heart disease.
For example: 100 (LDL) ÷ 55 (55) = 1.8 (LDL-HDL ratio).
Health experts designate the following LDL-HDL ratios as follows:
  • ideal: under 2.0
  • good: under 5.0
  • bad: over 5.0
A 2017 studyTrusted Source found that the LDL-HDL ratio had links to an increased risk of sudden cardiac death in the middle-aged male population.

Triglyceride HDL ratio = triglyceride level ÷ HDL

People can calculate their triglyceride HDL ratio by dividing their triglycerides by their HDL level. This is not a common measurement method, but it can help determine a person’s risk of heart disease. Some evidence also suggests that high triglyceride HDL ratios could indicate a higher risk of metabolic syndrome.
For example, 200 (triglyceride level) ÷ 55 (HDL) = 3.6 (triglyceride HDL ratio).
Health experts designate the following triglyceride HDL ratios as follows:
  • ideal: 2.0 or less
  • good: 4.0 to 6.0
  • bad: over 6.0 or above

You need a lot of discipline and mind power to eat clean with lots of vegetables and fruits. Such diet is not for everyone.

The seniors in my family just yolo with diet. But they take meds diligently. They are happy.

A "YOLO" approach to diet not only burdens the family members with future medical costs but also strains the country's healthcare budget.

Having a healthy diet and regular exercise is definitely good for preventive health approach.

However life is not binary. I think people should not turn into nutrition zealots.

If it suits the elderly's mindset to take a statin daily or inclisiran jab every 6 months and have nice cholesterol results, who are you all to judge?

So don't jelly if he can eat fried carrot cake every morning while having ldl levels below 100mg/dl. lol

Besides, the definition of a healthy diet by mainstream medicine is far from a low carb, high saturated fat animal diet proposed by some forumers here.

for me by all means try the non med route first, but if it isn’t working then advisable to listen to the trained professionals. At the very least you can still blame the healthcare system, but if you choose to believe someone in the internet that you don’t even know, you can only blame yourself.

Reminder stress and happiness also affects your lifespan.

No point forcing yourself to eat clean but stressed up with life.
