Hi Sirs, I'm looking to book a car via Jalan after reading the last few pages of this thread. Thanks for the information. I have a few questions to ask to see if my planning is sound.

My trip will be mid to end Sep 24, looking to rent for 10 days of drive, starting from Sapporo and returning at Chitose airport.

Total of 2 pax, but likely going for compact car like fit or note instead of the 600cc cars for safety.

Itinerary
Saporro (collect car on day 1 of drive)
Noribetsu
Lake Toya
Hakodate
Otaru
Tokachidake
Asahikawa
Biei
Daisetsuzan
Bihoro pass / Lake Mashu
Shiretoko
Asahikawa
Saporro
Chitose airport (return car)

First time to Hokkaido and looking to get the expressway pass to shorten some driving time.

Are Google map timings accurate or I need to provide more time in addition to their mentioned timings?

Are there stop breaks along the roads for toilet stop or meals/conveience store?

To get the best rate from Jalan, I should book this month (around 2/3 months before rental)? And collect the voucher to apply during the booking?

Thanks Gurus!

Also, are the cheaper car rental like World Net Rent-A-Car and AXCELIA safe to book on Jalan.net? Or should I go for the reputable ones like Nippon rent a car or Nissan Rent a car?

Edit: Based on past responses on this thread, World Net Rent a Car looks recommendable! Will consider this!

I think very ambitious for 10 days ...have u worked out where you are gonna stay ?

eg Hakodate to Otaru to Tokachidake

eg Hakodate is the size of Singapore, not sure how many days u plan to stay there

not sure why u go back to Sapporo, only to return car in Chitose ?

yes, Google map timing is fine .. or use 1min per KM to estimate

there r no shortage of rest stops ie michi no ekis in Hokkaido .. most of these offer toilets, restaurants, local produce

mid to end Sep is still early for Autumn .. your best chances are the mountain tops of Asahidake or Kurodake.

For 10 days, I would go to East Hokkaido, save places like Hakodate, Toya, Nobo, Otaru etc for next trip

I have used WorldNet rental twice. First time in May 2017 and second time in September 2019. Everything is good. No complaints. Price wise cheaper than others. I made reservations directly, not thru other parties.

I did a 12 days for South in May for Sakura and another 12 days for North in September, separately. For 10 days, IMHO, it is rush and packed program.

Thanks, will be considering to remove Hakodate from the plan to free up 2 days and to get the car straight from airport instead of Sapporo to have total of 12 days.

For the 10,000 yen coupon on Jalan.net, can I check if the 70,000 yen criteria must be before the insurance coverage or it can be after the add-ons?

Also, ETC card is not available to add-on for WorldNet page, i should be able to email them to get it added? Thanks!

u mean remove Hakodate ?

10k coupon can offset with Insurance add-on

i suspect WorldNet may not offer just the ETC, but would offer the Hokkaido Exp Pass onsite. Yes shld email them to ask ... regardless, not a big deal without either ETC or HEP

HEP may not result in cost savings ... it depends on your itin.

u can also check Honda ( blue logo ), usually gives good pricing ( not ETC, but offers HEP onsite ).

Oh yes, typo hahaha. Edited it to Hakodate.

Thanks, saw that you can pay cash quite easily too if you do not have the etc card.

Nice, will wait for the next 10,000 and do the booking, thanks!

Decided to reserve with world net first and to try again with the 10,000 yen voucher coming Wednesday. Based on these screenshot, any red flags? I find the price to be a little too good to be true. No other rental Coy is close to this price. Applied a 3,900 yen voucher to get it down to 67,760 yen with all insurance options taken (12 days - compact car).

Qn: compact car = cars like yaris / fit right? Prefer not to get the 600/800cc mini cars.

Unable to see your pics

Those 660cc are K-cars or "Light' cars, shld not b under "Compact"

i have rented 660cc cars several times before. These r fine for 2 pax and no issue with power, speed etc

The best 660cc was the Suzuki Hustler Hybrid (from J-NET rental), great car, almost brand new at low cost

My most recent rental was a 660cc Honda N-WGN, came equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control ... I dont have that for my last 2 cars in SG :D

Hope this works:

Interesting, I haven't tried cruise control, but sounds like a really useful feature for those long drives.

Generally Jalan.net is cheapest amongst various options. Some of the exceptions i seen is as follows:

i. Car rental own website providing free CDW and further discount (only for some of the smaller car rental companies)
ii. Budget car rental (kansai ringo station) via Tabirai JP (CDW included and price still lower). Other rental company dont seem to provide much discount at Kansai.

So Jalan should be the first point to check and maybe explore rakuten/Tabirai to double check.

Managed to snag the 10,000 Yen voucher and reserve the same car plan at 61,660 yen! Thanks all for sharing these booking tips :)
