Is it worth taking the expressway pass for hokkaido?

it depends on your itin

i have never bought it before in my previous trips there

a couple of times, I got just the ETC for the 30% toll discount on weekend long drives

mostly I take non toll roads in Hokkaido, or just pay per use

Are car rentals in Japan or Hokkaido generally no need to pay a deposit to secure the rental? I got 2 reservations under Jalan.net to Toyota Car Rental and deposit is not required, everything is done on site. So I'm a little worry if my bookings are really really confirmed as I have 2 seniors, 4 kiddos n 4 adults in tow and need car from day 1 from the airport...

Even with the inflated price it still seems OK, but it will depend on how long you are staying in places. For example if I randomly do one like this:

Day 1 Sapporo to Asahikawa (3380y)
Day 3 Asahikawa to Noboribetsu (6380y)
Day 5 Noboribetsu to New Chitose Airport (1790y)

Total = 11,550y, whereas 5 day express pass = 9,600y. Not the super ultra good deal it used to be before but still save a bit of cash.

But need to consider etc card 30% discount on weekend. Also, may not need to drive on expressway all the time.

I didn't take the pass in the end as it was rather pricey for 9 days. I covered many different cities from Biei to Lake Toya and it was still cheaper.

Hi all,

I am looking to rent a car for road trip for a upcoming trip to Hokkaido. My qns is, in the event of an accident with the rental car, the typical flow is to call emergency services, police or/and ambulance (if applies) and also the rental car company hotline. However, most, if not all, esims and data sims for tourist do not have call capability. Thus would like to seek recommendations and solutions as to how everyone tackled this painpoint.

Thanks,
R

Get a local sim card... AU network is good... Ratuken or KDDI.

I am in hokkaido now... I think mine is ratuken.. can get signals even in remote areas.. my wife is with some other network. No signal on the road.

Imagine heavy snowstorm and you need to make emergency call in the middle of nowhere!

Hokkaido is a huge place with a lot of wilderness!

I use cheap data sim for the journey. And connected with roaming for call purposes, to use for emergency. It’s rare, but just prepare
