Here got say the person name is Mr Leong with photo. Other ppl say he arrogant.

33 people were killed, and another 17 were pulled out of the debris. Subsequent investigation revealed that the collapse was caused by incompetent architectural design: the building lacked a foundation. Specifically, a dead load foundation. Building designs have to account for two “loads” – a live load, which is the weight of the people and furniture and other things inside a building, and a dead load, which is the weight of the building itself. The Hotel New World building design only accounted for the live load.

Idiotic Moves That Ended in Terrible Disasters
Mr. Leong, the unqualified idiot who drew the plans for the Hotel New World building.

There was one lucky guy who was in the building but somehow ended up on the street unscathed. He didn’t inform anyone and just went home. They listed him as dead at first and everyone was searching for him.
likely he was there for hanky panky and didn’t want to be known

Chiu should see seconds from disaster. The verdict was because they install so many aircon. Lack of balance between live and dead load.

any architect students here?
It's because of the water cooling system for the AC that's too heavy and stressing the structures.

I remember the Chinese news would keep referring to it as 新世界倒塌事件 … any time any public TV (community centres still had TV in a metal box on a pole at the time) got this line, a crowd would gather around the TV.

If I recalled correctly, there were a few people being pulled out naked.

building collapsed was bcos of illegal additional stories above the existing structures that cannot bear the added weight.
It was a couple but not married to each other

Remembered watch documentary on this. Quite entertaining.

In the end, lucky we had AMDK sexperts with us.
That's why sg progressed with these AMDK ard in the 70s and 80s.

If it happened now, the tiongs and ah san will just lift the top pieces off 1 by 1..
