2020 has taught me the importance of saving money HAHA I came across a saving plan that offers 2% returns, and I think that it is a rather value for money deal as compared to putting your money into a bank.
Any thoughts on this?

I don`t know anything about investment or stocks but I see many people making money from stocks markets. Too many people are making money from stocks liao, even my friends who recently got into it are making money. Hmm, something is amiss. Chinese got a saying, when wind comes pigs also can fly.
2020 is ending, i am more concern about 2021 and 2022 as these 2 years are the aftermath.
Stock market always rise over long term, its not difficult to make money in stock market. Those people who keep telling people stock market are risky and you will lose money in stock market are just as bad as those who tell people to buy speculative stocks. There are tons of solid companies that you can invest in for the long term.
nobody died sounds like a very low bar. infected another matter.Still have a job - checked
No one I know died from covid - checked
Investment didn't lose too much - checked
So can't complain about 2020
As a great philosopher sang....Still have a job - checked
No one I know died from covid - checked
Investment didn't lose too much - checked
So can't complain about 2020
As 2020 is ending soon, I start to tally my finance..
The bad part first..I sold more than $244K of my investment portfolio in 2020 and realized a loss of $52k. Another $37.5K unrealized loss still in the book because counter is suspended. All the counters that I sold are risky energy stocks and low grade reits. Decreased or suspended dividend payment resulted in 12% lower passive income received in 2020.
The good part , I received 56K dividend which covered my realized loss for 2020. I rebalanced my portfolio with 275k of purchase. Current portfolio is around 1 million and projected to generate around $61k dividend in 2021.
2020 realized and unrealized loss is 45k or 3% but after accounting for dividend received , investment portfolio is gaining 11k or 1.1%.. To sum up, this is 不幸中之大幸 ..I thought I am going to lose big in 2020 but turn out break even.
I believe most readers in this forum are probably doing well with their US portfolio. I am an old school sinkie investor who only know how to invest in the old economy like reit, energy and finance for dividend income.. Investing in growth tech stocks are beyond me.
I cannot quite follow your math, actually. How do S$56K of dividends and S$89.5K of capital losses (realized and unrealized) equate to +1.1% performance?

also, you ok with "isolation" for large part of the year?
Personally, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many disruptions and economic downfall, the year 2020 is like a rollercoaster ride for me.
Was wondering if anyone has been saving up till the next time we can travel again?
