Wait for 290x if you can, it should be out really really soon.

The no 1 issue with xfire/sli is game support, not all games support multi gpu. If your favourite games don't, your 2nd card is totally useless. Of course besides that there're heat issue and stuttering issue as well.

Read at least a few months to know what you want. Make a note pad. Write notes on it. Learn it, wc half the journey is learning what you like, like theory crafting your wc.
