HSR Tickets do they need to be booked in advanced?

Or can just go to station and buy on the spot?

Seems to have quite a few trains a day

I bought the ticket for Taipei-Taichung on the spot. No problems. Taking a train in Taiwan is like talking a MRT in Sg. The trains are frequent with plenty of seats. Unless there is a special festival or holiday, you should have no problems buying tickets on the spot.

i checked the website discount range from 10 to 30% ..

Free cabins are at carriage 10, 11 and 12. Normally I will just stand, because it's just one stop for me to get to Hsinchu from Taoyuan. There was once I stood from Taichung to Hsinchu, as the HSR was super packed. No choice...

Being a weekend, should I buy the ticket on spot or online? As I planned to depart TPE on 1500hrs ride and return ard 2300hrs (plan to attend an event over there).

Wonder if buying a "return" ticket is better or opt for "single trip" ticket is better (as I am not what time my event ends)?

u can buy both online.. then top up.. if u miss ur ride.. or decide to change the timing...

Thanks for feedback, the problem is I can only confirm whether the trip to Taoyuan is on or off, depending on my schedule the day before.

So I would like to find if I buy my tickets on the spot, would it be difficult since it's a weekend, thanks

can i just check how do we book online? do we just input our passport number in normally? and how is payment like? from their website it says credit card like visa,amex,mastercard accepted...but is it through paypal or just key in the number directly?

You can buy advance ticket at 1st level of Taipei Main Station. There are booth selling advance tickets.

You have to add your 4 digit birthday to the end of your passport. For example your birthday is 5th September so you have to add 0509 after you keyed in your passport number. These 4 digits will be used to retrieve your HSR ticket at the train station.
