We have surpassed goh chock tong's vision in many ways like world-class healthcare with subsidies, more efficient urban living, cleanliness, safety, modern infrastructure, public housing, affordable dining, but negative nancies and oppies pretend that we are some poor, backwards country. Switzerland is not perfect and has expensive healthcare, old-age poverty and high taxes that affect the working class.

Agree. I also dunno why edmwers say until SG is far behind Switzerland. SG is at least on par, if not better.

I think probably only Switzerland's weather is superior to SG.

Many people grow up poor. Your life is not special nor tragic.

I also grew up poor. Still can remember how home only left water, no electricity

You can change your life.

born poor isnt a crime. its how we make use of our time in the years ahead to play catch up. those can study good, those who cant, find something we are good at and enjoy...then work becomes so much easier.

complain wont make any difference.

Growing up sacrifices were made every day…. That’s all

edit - for the people ridiculing me, thanks I guess

and This was how I spent my early life. Thanks again for your time

- reuse clothing donated from other relatives’ kids for manny years

- use same pair of school shoes for few years since no $$ to buy new pair

- only meal I had everyday for lunch for three years was cooked rice with water and salt coz no money to buy meat/ eggs

- “helping” at relatives’ shophouse after school for some $$
1st of all, you must be grateful that you have a healthy and able body.

There are many people who are determined and hardworking but from a poor background.

They excel in their studies and go on to have a good career.

Then pick up personal finances and investment knowledge to grow wealth.

Start improving yourself. Can consider reading some self help books. Try Atomic Habits.

Yea at least he is not disabled or struck with some incurable disease... I volunteer with SPD and I've seen cases where very poor people are wheel chair bound after being hit with some rare neuro degenerative disease. Really pitiful...

If this makes you feel better.
- my clothes and text books were handed down by my cousins for years
- I never had any luxury items such as walkman during my adolescence years. By the time I could afford one, diskman era liao.
- I didn't even have toys as a kid.
- I ate mainly home cooked stuff for lunch
- we often ate whatever leftover dishes the night before
- I still recall eating one loaf of bread for a week.
- I started working part time since 13
- I was often bullied in school and by relatives.
- my dad whacked me whenever he was unhappy.
- I was asthmatic and sickly. My asthma attack was so bad that I couldn't feed myself. I was hospitalized many times.
- compared to my siblings, I was the worst academically.
- We almost nv ate outside. Not even buy chicken rice once a month.
- I did household chores since I was 5!
And many more!

I'm much older now! Everyone has a past. Life goes on, man.

One reason why I don't reminisce the past or hang out with school mates. To me, it's mostly bad memories.

The only good memory was Andy me had quite a few girls confessed to me! But uncle was too troubled to think of a gf! By the time I had one, I was 25 already. WTF.

I could have been a Romeo. :(

last time i dont know is swipe from youtube or where
liked if poor when young, its due to parents
but when the kid grows up and get education n such, go into work force and still remain poor, then its no longer the parents fault but the kid's problem.
ownself cannot make it n still want to blame everyone but himself.

thinking back, i was given pocket money but since poor from young, dont know why see $ just wana save a lot. no target as in need to save how much by when but i will keep aside 50% of my pocket money. while classmates go to jiak KFC Macdonald and such, i stayed back in canteen n eat the bee hoon soup with lots of chilli. i think only few pathetic fishcake n cant rem any vegetables. now think back, actually consider malnutrition lo. drinks no no because they r expensive. save the $ inside pocket is the best

No choice. I also born poor. Understand hunger and pocket no money. Have to drink water and stay indoor.

Remenber drink coke just to keep myself full. I was young, so I have to kept working in restaurants, kfc, mcd, pizza hut, ljs, burger king after school cos I know I have food to eat and money to survive. So young no one wants to hire.

Go orchard without spending single cent. Only bus fare. Walk around and happily chit chat with frx. Same to my frz. He too no money cos parent didn't work.

Sometimes it’s not we choose to be poor … I believe it’s all fated. Just Like me when I have some money … I invested in my business, stocks etc… but crisis happened and I am back to square 1 .. But I have not given up yet … still ploughing through.

I don't believe in fate.. or waiting for a saviour.

At the end of the day, only you can help yourself. 👍

Money is a very solvable problem.

what people fail to see is the underlying issue that usually coupled with being poor.
Being deficit in both the looks and brain department at the same time, now thats an intractable problem.

so what should one do if they were poor, stupid and ugly?

TS no fault to wear old clothes but is your fault to wear dirty clothes, same goes with old shoes.
Clothes do not define a person. Look at Mark Zuckerberg, Meta boss, he wears simple T shirts every day...

Mark Zuckerberg's signature gray T-shirts are custom-made by the Italian luxury brand Brunello Cucinelli

These shirts are specially crafted from high-quality cotton, with an estimated cost of US$500 each

this is very true

and despite him not being very likeable to some

Chan Chun Sing is a good example

Chan grew up in a single-parent household.
His mother, Kwong Kait Fong, was a machine operator
He lived in a three-room HDB flat in MacPherson with his mother, grandparents, aunt and sister until he was 30 years old
