Hmm.
I wonder what I should get. Headache
Get what you need. In my opinion, it is more important that you consider the weight of the laptop you are going to buy.

Ultimately, you will be carrying it day in day out to school.

Weight is one. Supporting my program is another.
T420? The second choice? Well, gonna do some homework later to check.

some programs are quite painful to use at low res. especially those with interfaces that have a lot of "panels" / sections / subwindows. make you scroll like mad or re-layout and have to keep switching.
some video and 3D software packages are like that.

to some extent it's personal and subjective, but to some extent, some interfaces were just not designed to comfortable at low res.

I'll personally pack as many pixels as I can at the point of purchase. Chose a 1920x1200 panel for my 15.4" T61p and I doubt I can use anything lower than 1680x1050 even on a notebook now.

Yes, this is quite true. But unfortunately those sets you purchase from school has the high resolution screen taken off to cut cost I suppose.

After I got use to my T400's 1400x900 screen resolution, now, you give me a 1366x768 resolution, I cannot get use to it anymore. I find the characters are not as sharp or not sharp at all.

Lenovo ThinkPad T420 for commonly used programs like; AutoCAD, 3D Studio Max, Photoshop and Illustrator.

Do you all think it'd be enough?

A HD but not full hd w520 wouldn't be recommended for me.. Right?

Lenovo ThinkPad T420 @ $1743.00 w/GST

Lenovo ThinkPad W520 @ $2031.00 w/GST

How was your T420?

not bad, usually i torture it wit alot of intensive data tuning excel sheet still running fine,
no major hardware issue, drink water a few time, drop on the floor once, still working.
but the autobackup prompting very irritating.
right now almost 70% of our lap top user all using thinkpad, T420/T410/X220

14inches is a pain to see, but i suggest u get a bigger screen like w520 for graphic intensive work and also delicate graphic cards is impt. unless you have a 20 inches monitor to make use of.
but usually for working with graphics designer tend to get imac right? i usually see my designer vendor came to our office with mac book to show me his work etc.

How did you guys manage to order from Lenovo USA

tried the lenovo checkout ..seems does not accept international credit card.

tried the amazon checkout, it keeps rejecting the Borderlinx address saying Phone number is incorrect.

Invalid area code. Please enter a non-special telephone number (non toll-free).

WTF??!?!?!?

Wow? It sure did.
Used to be $1.8k but $2k now.
The w520 is non hd as well. May have to reconsider.
But I have zero idea what to get for my course.. Considering the fact that I have to use many designing programs..
What course are you doing?

I'm taking aerospace engineering. Not really intensive on AutoCAD and other CAD programs, but it does churn well with the i7 sandy bridge :)

Must understand, HDD prices have went up since last year, thus the increment in prices.

But ah, for the X220, you are basically restricted to 500GB harddisk at max for now as it is using a thinner profile drive at 7.5mm.

But aren't you using the laptop for AutoCAD work too? Can the graphics on the X220 handle that?

Yup, but I have went the SSD route, so now I'm on a 160GB intel 320 and storage is definitely not a limiting factor for me. Just have to manage your space well, and dump your downloads etc. into your external drives, or your desktop.

And as I've said above, it runs just fine, since most of the work is still borne by the processor, though having a dedicated gpu will definitely help to improve speeds. However the limiting factor is still your HDD, so once you're on a SSD you'll never look back, trust me.

Shouldn't be a problem. Similar to my X220 but with a built in gpu, and daily programs that I run on my X220 are photoshop, fireworks, office, premiere elements, and vegas pro. Even with 1366x768 res, photo and video editing is not a problem, just have to get used to it initially.

Honestly, mobile sandy bridge processors is a huge improvement in mobile computing, it feels snappier than my AMD x6, which in the end led me to selling off my AMD in December last year and hooted a i5 sandy bridge for my rig at home :D

And yes, you could go for the W520, but if for me having the same resolution and more weight is not justifiable enough for me to get the W520 over the T420. However, the weight factor of a laptop is very dependable on your preferences, so it's entirely up to you to decide. Personally I have friends who don't mind lugging around a W510 or a 17" MBP around campus day and night. Hope that helps.

Just my 2 cents :)
