T43... T61... Need Advice...

HI! Greetings to you fellow Thinkpadder...

I am currently using a T41. Saw a shop at AMK... better not mention name as dun wish to be felt offended in anyway.

The shop selling T43 at abt $799 and T61 at abt $1999... need advice pls.

T43 Specs
1. Intel Centrino 1.86Ghz,
2. Built in TrackPoint and TouchPad,
3. Integrated WIFI (Wireless Adaptor),
4. 2Gb RAM !!
5. 60GB HDD
6. DVDROM drive,
7. Windows XP Professional installed..
8. Good Battery Life Abt 2 hrs ! IBM Warranty till end Dec 2008 !!

T61 Specs
1) Intel Centrino Core 2 duo T7300 2.0GHz
2) 2048MB DDRII RAM
3) 160GB Harddisk
4) 14.1" SXGA screen!!!!Intel Graphics
5) Ports: 3xUSB 2.0/S-video/VGA/Firewire/infra red/Built in Mic/
6) DVD+/-RW/CDRW Super drive.
7) Weight: 2.5kg.
8) Bluetooth & Intel Pro Wireless abg

can anyone help me with this? Was think if worse.. I might jus get teh T43 to tide thru nxt few yrs... then change?

After 3 years, I'm still using my T43. It's actually enough to do development work. (Websphere App server + eclipse + DB, or, VS.NET with IIS)

I think you should try to find the spare part at backlane of SLS then fix it yourself. It shouldn't be too difficult as IBM/Lenovo has an excellent maintenance manual to show you how to dismantled the whole laptop and replace the parts.

Hi. I'm a newbie here, but have been a user for 2 years. T43 is very stable for surfing/office work/simple entertainment, but for you the warranty only runs till end of this year. Beyond that, even if you are a fervent IT enthusiast, IBM parts will cost you a bomb should you wanna repair on your own in case of failure.

T60/T61 series are Lenovo's own line I think (dont quote me on that), but I've a friend with a T60 from NUS and crashed within a year. No doubt there's warranty too but product stability of the new lines scares me.

Well, I guess it's a trade off for you depending on how much you're willing to gamble. However, if T61 has fresh 3 years warranty with potential upgradability of RAM till max for Vista, then I think it's worthwhile without potential headaches after end of this year.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Should be ok to get free on-site service even without the card right? How do I contact IBM/Lenovo? Is there a number I can find?

By coincidence, I've just contacted IBM/Lenovo Service Centre today.

I supposed you do not need the warranty card, since the warranty follows the machine and not the owner. Your machine is probably registered with Lenovo Singapore already.

hi all,

Jus got a Thinkpad T61 at $1599 from Newstead at Funan 4th floor. Think its a pretty good deal - anyone interested do check it out.

Anyway, mine comes with Core 2 Duo T8100, 1gb ram (paid $35 for another 1gb), 160 gb hdd and a 128MB nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M instead of the standard X3100. I downgraded it to XP Pro for additional $50 bucks too (provided my own licence key) When I checked at 3rd floor lenovo, similar spec selling at $2799.
