Wow cool ! You just have to insert the SIM card into the SIM card slot at the laptop and the software is able to detect? Then why are people getting Gobi card to install?

You need the WWAN card of course, or that SIM Slot will just become a place to hide your SIM card...

The beauty of buying a ThinkPad is they won't void your warranty if you remove the user replaceable component cover and replace your RAM, WWAN, WIFIcard, HDD etc.

You can always get from any 3rd party, so long your equipment is compatible with your ThinkPad and do it on your own, and it won't void the warranty.

I am sure other ThinkPad users here can shed some lights as well...

Yup, Lenovo has a website that has videos on how to dismantle your laptop.

CRU stands for "Customer Replacement Units" so you can remove/replace them without voiding the warranty.

Just replaced my out-of-warranty CPU heatsink & fan with a refurbished unit for my T61, and a general cleaning of the laptop. Now it chugging along nicely, with a new stick of 2GB ram, a 500gb 7200rpm HDD and a fresh install of Win7.

Feeling absolutely chuffed!!

PS: I had 1 incident when my T61 was under warranty. My keyboard was acting up and Lenovo suggest replacing it with a new piece. The service staff RECOMMENDED to remove the keyboard myself and swap it with the new unit, instead of activating a technician to come down to swap it.

Anyway, I was surfing through the Lenovo Forum and there is an issue going on with the Fan with X220. Anyone experienced noisy fan? I am still waiting for my set to come. hope it is fault free.

Installing your ThinkPad WWAN

I observed that there's a lot of confusion over getting the ThinkPad WWAN to work. Many people assume that they can just simply slot their SIM card into the slot near the battery bay and instantly get Mobile Broadband. Then they realise that they need to get a missing WWAN module. When they do so and open up the ThinkPad to install it, then they get a bigger shock when they don't find the WWAN antenna installed!

In a nutshell, you need three things to enable Mobile broadband on your ThinkPad

1. Integrated Mobile Broadband Upgradable ThinkPad - This will mean that your ThinkPad comes installed with the WWAN antenna. You will find that the antenna is positioned properly and taped together near the mini-pcie expansion slot (Near the Wifi module). How do you know if your ThinkPad has this? Check your invoice or box that came with your ThinkPad and look for this entry or similar - "SBB WWAN MP-WWAN READY". Or you can try to remove your palm rest + keyboard and check if the cables are there near the mini-pcie slot. If you don't have the antenna, then you will need to purchase a pair from Amazon or ebay. Installing the antenna is NOT easy as it requires you to dismantle the LCD panel. And to get to the LCD panel requires you to practically dismantle the entire ThinkPad. Check your manual for step by step instructions
   
2. Compatible WWAN module - You will require an additional Ericsson F3507G 3G HSDPA 7.2 WWAN module (compatible with X200, X300, X301 T400, T400s, T500, W500, SL300, SL400 and SL500), Qualcomm Gobi (compatible with X200, X300, X301 T400, T400s, T500, W500), Qualcomm Gobi 2000 (compatible with T410, T510, W510, X100e and Edge) or Qualcomm Gobi 3000 for the latest range of ThinkPads (X220, X220t, T420, T420s, W520). Again, please check for compatibility with your user manuals or Thinkwiki
   
3. Mobile broadband SIM card (M1, StarHub or Singtel SIM) - Subscribe to any one of the telcos mobile broadband plans and they will provide you with a USB dongle with a SIM card. Insert the SIM at the back of the ThinkPad after removing the battery.

There's a X1 review here and has some comparisons between the Macbook Air. Battery life for the Air and Vaio S is around 7 hrs, while the X1 only clocks half that time.

Both X1 and the Air feature in-built batteries, so they are not removable. Price wise, the most expensive would be the Vaio followed by the X1 (around $2.5k) and the Air.

As I ask sony they say I can unscrew viao s builtin batt and dismantle it if u use at home

So I guess viao s got more plus liao
For this size and weight n battery

And u say battery on x1 wow soo weak then I tink vaio s is a better option now

I feel that the X1 totally missed the mark as an ultraportable. Sure it looks sleek and thin but there are so many factors that disadvantage it that I do not see a point of the X1. The X220 has better specs, beautiful IPS matt screen and superb battery life and it is cheaper!

Crippled battery life, glossy screen and average specs, coupled with a high price tag doesn't justify anyone getting it...

If u are looking for the top-end Sony, it will be the Z-series. Mad specs but even crazier pricing of four thousand smackaroos... i7 with RAID 0 SSDs with a docking system.

Low $2k for the i5 and high $2k for the i7.

I was sceptical about the 12.5" screen because I was using a 14.1" laptop but after a while, i got used to it. Getting old, so had to increase the dpi to 105%. Hehe!

Have a look at the model at Addon in Funan. I bought mine there.

I thought so too. My eyes getting poorer since i look at the screen day in and out of work. But i prefer portable and long lasting performance laptop, hence X220.

If not stated leh? mean bo antenna? my US invoice did not state anything on "SBB WWAN MP-WWAN READY"

@ Quest - Which model are you using now? When you purchased it, they should have sent you a confirmation email with the specs or if you still have the order ID and customer number you can check the order status.
