No need to test for image retention. If you cannot see it when you use it normally, there is no image retention. If you can see it, then call for Apple support.

In short, enjoy your purchase. What you don't know, won't kill you.

Image Retention is NOT normal and it will only get worse over time.

The reason I brought up LG is because the retina MBPs have displays made by LG and Samsung. So far, almost all the displays that have issues with image retention are made by LG not Samsung.

As for the iMac, I also don't believe IR is caused by GPU but so far the cases reported are mostly people who have upgraded the GPU on their iMacs so I let the numbers speak for themselves.

And sometimes IR don't happen immediately. I came cross some computers that developed this issue 6 months after usage.

I am running the 680MX and I don't have image retention. Seriously image retention is because of screen, not the GPU.
I don't think it is the LG screen that is causing this, some have reported connecting a second non-Apple screen and IR still present on the non-Apple screen.

yup, you can install RAM yourself on the 27" iMac. bought mine with 8GB RAM, went to buy 2x 4GB sticks from OWC..

Dear bros, thanks a lot for advice on the ram. Especially those who go extra mike in posting video.

Will the cpu upgrade to I7 be worth it for my usage above?

Thinking of getting base model, fusion drive and upgrade ram separately. Cos still need to factor in apple care prices... Shag

Unless you do a lot of video encoding day in day out, you will not use the i7's hyperthreading capabilities. Also the i7 iMac will run hotter than the i5 iMac, with no real performance gain in everyday use. You can read more here.

Core i5 or Core i7

You can save that money, and use it to get 680MX GPU. It will be more of a performance gain than the i7.

Another suggestion for RAM. You can buy 2 x 8Gb first and stick it in together with your current 2 x 4Gb for a total of 24Gb. See if it is enough for your usage.

Chances are, it is more than enough. For example, Windows 7 64-bit premium can't use more than 16Gb of RAM anyway.

If it is enough, then you have just saved the cost of 16Gb of RAM which is about 200+ SGD.
