Would you all like to hear of further inside scoops regarding the LEE family? Well …here goes…

LKY is on a heart pacer. His wife as you probably know is in the ICU of Tan Tock Seng Hospital (in a coma and, sadly, not expected to recover), his daughter Lee Wei Ling married an Indian businessman in Hong Kong against his wishes but has since divorced, his other son, Lee Hsien Yang, is having an affair with his Singtel staff (a Malay woman), and his wife, Lee Suet Fern, is in the process of divorcing him (she has since left Lee & Lee and is now Managing Partner of Stamford Law Corpn). One grandson of LKY (LHL’s son) is not on talking terms with another grandson (LHY’s son). The whole family, it would seem, is splitting asunder. The only source of comfort is that LKY has been reconciled of late with his only daughter, and she has been accompanying him in all his later overseas trips (more as his personal doctor than anything else).

You want more? Well, here goes….

In the ’90s hotelier Ong Beng Seng wanted to bring in F1 racing to Singapore but the proposal was not approved by the PAP government. Then in the ensuing years, he somehow managed to wrestle over a gazetted national heritage site Jade Villa off Nassim Road, had its status removed and converted into high class condo called Nassim Jade. Many units were taken by LKY and his family members (at special discounts on top of the usual market discounts). In fact, all the LEE cronies bought units there, including LKY’s good friend, the then Chief Justice Yong Pung How. During this period there was also a speculative craze in property transactions building up and the Government had to act to prevent a bubble from forming. PM Goh wanted to introduce several drastic measures to arrest and defuse this potential problem, but was advised by LKY to go for softer options. The reason was, his daughter, Lee Wei Ling, had been one of the property speculators at that time, holding on to an open position of more than 10 properties on her speculative board, all of which were still in various stages of payment.

After the goodwill offered by Ong Beng Seng to the LEE family through the sale of units at Nassim Jade, the astute businessman then re-submitted his proposal for holding the F1 race in Singapore, and, as expected it was approved lock, stock & barrel. The government even picked up the tabs in paying for the cost of fabricating the race circuit for his benefit! Once they have taken the bite, it is difficult to say no the second time round isn’t it?

a) Lee Wei Ling. She was a very rebellious daughter in her younger days, playful and likes to challenge authority. A friend of mine whose uncle worked as one of her personal bodyguards told of a time when she went into a shop from the front, leaving her bodyguard outside, and disappeared through the back door. He had a hard time trying to explain to the old man how he lost contact with his daughter after that.

b) Lee Hsien Loong. He was drafted into national service in 1971 and posted straight to OCS (Officer Cadet School in SAFTI). At that time, the route for enlistees to become SAF officers was 3 months basic military training, followed by 3 months Section Leaders Training (SISL at SAFTI) and then 9 months OCS (this was later reduced to 6 months). While at OCS, his routine was attending lectures in the day (hardly ever partake in any real physical training, usually standing nearby watching his comrades doing all the physicals) and by end of day the chauffeur would come to pick him home. No stay-in for him. No rifle cleaning. No area cleaning duties. In the morning before 8 am the chauffeur would fetch him to camp and he would just stroll in when others are having their muster-parade, etc. Well, can’t think of a better and easier way to pass your NS days than this.

A couple of months before his stepped down from his days in full time service with the military, he was promoted from Colonel to Brig-General. Days later, he left and join PAP as a co-opted candidate for the elections. Ever heard of any other colonel in the army who was promoted (to BG) and then resigned? He would have been shot.

c) Lee Kuan Yew. He was born with the name Harry Lee Kuan Yew in his birth certificate. All was fine with that name, especially when he went to Cambridge and mingled with the British aristocracy. But when he returned and had to mingle with the largely Chinese ground during his early days in politics, suddenly the name “Harry” became an impediment to his progress with the more Chinese oriented colleague. He did a deed poll and removed the hairy part to win the Chinese ground. Anyway, after his return from UK he worked as a small time lawyer representing workers’ unions and was responsible for evoking anti-colonial sentiments among union members. The Hock Lee Bus Riots were in some part incited by his advocation of anti-colonial sentiments.

During one of the court appearances on behalf of the unions at a district court, he was chided by the magistrate for some transgression of court procedures. The sitting magistrate at that time was a man called J.B. Jeyaretnam. That reproach left an indelible mark on him and he probably swore on vengeance one day. He did get his chance. After the 1959 municipal elections the PAP swept to victory and formed the first self government and LKY was elected Singapore’s first PM. His first act of duty? JBJ was removed as a district judge. Now it’s the turn of JBJ to swear on vengeance against LKY. He joined the WP which was founded by ex-chief minister David Marshall. And so the feud between PAP and the WP has all along been personal – it was always JBJ against LKY and not so much the WP against the PAP. That was the sad thing about what could have been for Singapore opposition politics had JBJ put aside his personal agenda.

LKY did make a "famous" speech about how grads should marry grads because by his theory, smart wife + smart hubby = smart kids.

LKY obviously thinks Dragon Lee is smart. I am sure he allowed the marriage to Wong Ming Yang because he felt she was smart. So when an albino child was born, it must have knocked his socks off. It definitely put to rest his theory of wife with good genes + hubby with good genes = kids with good genes.

What happened is certainly not the albino's fault and certainly not Wong Ming Yang's fault. Rumours arise and we will never know what really happened to Wong Ming Yang. But the dead can't see. I pity the albino being embroiled in all this sh*t.

Coming to Phey Yew Kok, the official story is that Phey Yew Kok, President of the NTUC and a PAP MP, was charged on four counts of criminal breach of trust involving a total sum of S$83,000.He was also charged on two counts under the Trade Unions Act for investing $18,000 of trade-union money in a private supermarket without the approval of the minister.

This is actually what happened. Phey and his buddies set a private supermarket called Safewell or something like that. On public holidays, his staff loaded goods from SILO supermarket main warehouse and sent these to Safewell supermarket. They then invoiced this company at cost price. There is therefore no loss on the books but no profit either. Further investigations revealed that these cashiers from SILO were in cahoots with the owners of nearby provision stores. These owners lined up with (eg) $200 worth of goods and the cashiers keyed in only $100-00 and the proceeds were shared later. Phey then rented a couple of lorries to physically steal goods from his own supermarkets on the first day of CNY, when the supermarkets were closed. Someone took photographs (obviously not with digital cameras, and certainly no STOMP) and these surfaced later. In short, he was abusing his position to get his supplies cheaper by getting the buying power of SILO to benefit his company.

Also, he was alleged to have used union funds to invest in a private venture and purchased tour buses for the unions amongst other things. (Just a trivia, the Merz he abandoned, Car plate 6666, 6666 struck 4-D 1st prize two weeks after he ran.)

As normal in such cases, he was released on bail. But unusually, he was not asked to surrender his passport. But Phey Yew Kok decided to jump bail anyway, and his two sureties lost their $50,000 deposit. Some say he was last heard of in Thailand, eking out a miserable existence as a fugitive, others claim he is operating a transport company in Taiwan.

When JBJ asked in parliament why the police did not ask the court to have Phey's passport seized, Chua Sian Chin the MHA minister lied in parliament that the police officer forgot. Later after repeated questioning by JBJ, he revealed that the Police did ask for the passport to be seized. The solicitor general Ghow however did not do so.

It is speculated that Phey would have open a can of worm if had he been really taken to the stand. The charges he faces was just the tip of the iceberg.

The story started when Lim Chee Onn was slated to replace Devan Nair, who was stepping down to be President. Phey sudddenly made know his intention to stand for the post and oppose Lim Chee Onn.

He had the support of a few omnibus unions under him (SILO and PIEU). Mind you, SILO, PIEU etc were large omnibus unions based on broad industry grouping. Simple maths would have him taken away a significant no of votes if he run for election in NTUC. What Phey want to gain by opposing Lim Chee On was protected his power base and uses the union funds to provide perks to his member and enriching himself.

But Phey was not a very popular person in the labour union scene. He not only had a lot of enemies in his own union - even Devan Nair once said in the ST I think that of all the unions, the Omnibus unions seemed to receive the most number of threats in the mail. In fact, after Phey's downfall, the NTUC even got letters from INDONESIA, believe it or not - people had actually left Singapore to live there because he made life so tough for them.

Phey also was on the NWC. When some people in SIA didnt' want to donate money to schemes he supported e.g. lottery tickets, he actually HAD THEIR NWC wage increase and 13 month pay withheld!!!

Moreover, he had a role in fixing Tan Wah Piow and other students activitists. In the 1970's, student agitation in Uni Singapore was growing and for the first time, they realized that there were no hidden hands involved, no foreign funding and worse still no communist bogeyman available. It was a genuine student movement who became aware of the wider world.

Toh Chin Chye was getting mad and demanding detention, deporting of foreign students and sacking. But some PAP cadres and the Union movement actually showing empathy. They fought the communist in the trenches and knew without doubt the differences between the communist and this lot. Even more upsetting was that the general student population including academia actually supported the student leaders. The suitability certificate introduced to keep away undesirable students was not working.

For the first time, old man and his close associates were in a quandary. ISA could not be applied. So in the end, the courts we brought in, Tan Wah Piow was charged (and he fled), the Malaysian and HK students were deported. Others student was expelled from their unis.

Hence, there's a school of thought that he was going to blurt the lot on the PAP/Government's role in assisting him to fix the students activists if he was taken to court.

But opposing Lim Chee Onn was certainly the biggest mistake he made. Shortly after he made the announcement, he was arrested for embezzlement and charged. Lim Chee Onn took over and disbanded the omnibus unions and broke it into 90 odd smaller unions. They even charged one of his staff for CBT for an amount less than $50 and convicted him. People then knew that it was frighten the rest of the unionist from opposing Lim Chee Onn.

if LKY served as intepreter for the japs, then why isn't he prosecuted when the japs surrendered? didn't make sense he didn't face any legal action and went on to become the PM of SG.

I dun think being an interpreter is a crime unless you actively participate in the murder and torture of people. It's just a job like any other although post war, many interpreters were murdered because of them working with the enemy.
