I went into bios and set all cores manually, P4/P6 to 5.2Ghz and others to 5.1GHz.

It works and run on 5.1Ghz, however, draw horrifying 300+w power and my AIO again thermal throttling during the first pass of Cinebench R23....

For heavy 12900K o/c, you need custom WC to tame the heat? :unsure:

My moderate 12600K o/c, on Noctua DH-15S, already recorded 90 deg as the highest temp.

Hi there,

Apologies for the long post. I need for some helps on understanding 12900K core speed.

System:

  1. CPU: Intel 12900K
  2. MB: ASUS TUF Z690 WIFI D4
  3. Memory: G.Skill trident neo 3600C16 16GB*2 running on SPD setting
  4. PSU: Corsair HX1200
  5. AIO: Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360
I just received the 1700 bracket yesterday and finally the 12900k will not thermal throttling.

My understanding: 12900K is able to to run single core up to 5.2Ghz

My observation:

  1. CPU draw 240+w power with Cinebench R23 with all cores running at 4.9Ghz and scores around 26600 on multi core test. CPU temperature: 85C
  2. CPU draw 65+w power with Cinebench R23 with core speed flicking between 4.9Ghz to 5.0Ghz and scores around 1800 on single core test.
Thoughts and additional information:

  1. To my reading, my scores are lower than general reviews available on internet.
  2. 2. CPU core speed can reached to 5.1Ghz for short period only when CPU is idle.
  3. I am using all default bios settings, currently on version 0807 latest. Based on my experience, the observation did not change with the bios version.
  4. I tried to down voltage -0.08 for CPU which makes it to run at 1.19 volts. Now Cinebench R23 only draw 200w on multi core test and scores the same results as 265xx-266xx with temperature dropped to 72C
  5. CPU-z reports multiplier (8 - 51) . There is no 52? why?
  6. In bios, I saw the information there are two cores should be able to boost to 5.2Ghz.
I am not sure if my CPU is working fine, or could some one explain how could I boost my core speed to 5.2Ghz

i'm not familiar with the TUF bios but i can't imagine it being too different from strix. Go to your p core settings and enable per core. you can set single core boost to something like 5.4, and 8 core boost to 5.1. You can then turn on TVB+1 or +2 profile. During low load and if temp has headroom, it'll boost up cores by 2 bins.

For ADL, AIOs are not performing very well due to it simply not having good enough coldplates. For example, a custom cpu block with a 360 rad is about 10c colder than a 360 AIO. Just make sure your aio has good contact on the CPU and the rad has fresh airflow so that it can perform at its best.

May I know if you see any obvious improvement in gaming compare previous already fast amd zen 3 cpu?

All in all the update was not much for 1440p maxed settings as it's mostly GPU bound, but you could see there is a difference. Can ignore the lows btw this game in built benchmark lows is kinda messed up.

Another common game that is often benched would be SOTTR. This is tested at 1440p highest preset, same settings for cpu/gpu as above.

All in all, if you have a very tuned 5900x a 12900k wouldn't make much of a diff at 1440p maxed out :) But it isn't as "similar" as reviews suggest either.

Here's mine:
Intel i7-12700k
Aircooled by Noctua NH-U9S single fan
PL2 limit 175W (down from 190W), PL1 limit 165W (up from 125W).
FSB 102Mhz (because the default Asrock FSB is not 100 but 99.8MHz)
Prime95 max temps is 100 C (occurs only on 1 core) at 175W, 90 C at 165 W.

4x8GB DDR4-3600C16 Crucial Ballistix
Gear 1, running at DDR4-3866MHz, 16-18-18-38 2T
The RAM can't go any faster, AIDA64 scores worsens significantly if it gets faster.
Aida64: Read 57.7GB/s, Latency 56 - 57 ns (some variation)

CPU-Z bench:
Single CPU: 806.9
Multi CPU: 9582.8

Cinebench R23:
Single: 1900-1950
Multi: 22200-22500

This system is going to be htpc + VM in a small chassis, not meant for heavy computation, so that is why the CPU cooler and power is downsized.

I'm impressed by the 12700k. But rather disappointed that DDR5 is unavailable at a reasonable price as DDR4. Decided to spend more on CPU.

Felt that 12600k P-cores have been compromised in clock speed and cache, and 12900k has too many undesirable E-cores.

update: lowered PL1 to 150W, PL2 to 165W for 40s to keep CPU max 96 degrees C.
Cinebench R23: Multicore drop by 1% to about 22000, Single core drop by 2%-3% to 1890-1900.
No significant change in AIDA64 RAM bench
No significant change CPU-Z bench (probably because it is too short)

Results still beat locked core i7-12700.

Anyone can explain in layman how do I decide/base on what features if I need an H or B board for 12700?

You basically lose some extra connections to the PCI devices and storage as the interconnect between the CPU and the chipset is cut by roughly half.

There is still so much available it is not really an issue unless you are a super power user that needs to run 3xPCIE 4.0 NVMe drives at full speed or need more than 4 SATA HDD ports or you want to run dual GPU at PCI 5.0 x8 in the future.

So it should be fine using a B board if i only intend to use 2 x PCIE 3.0 nvme and 2 x sata ssd. Not going to run dual gpu xD.

Yup, that's more than enough bandwidth left over and I doubt any board will support less than what you listed.

If you are doing mostly gaming, a 12400 + B660 looks like the best cheap combo this time round if 5600X doesn't drop in price.

The transition from the LGA1200 socket to the LGA1700 socket saw a 42% increase in pin count, resulting in a more extended socket. Consequently, Alder Lake chips are larger and more rectangular than Rocket Lake, which is smaller and has a more squared shape. The problem falls on the Independent Loading Mechanism (ILM). The ILM still latches to Alder Lake processors at the same pressure points as Rocket Lake. The result is that the mechanism pushes down on the processor in the center, causing it to sit lower than on the edges. It's the reason why Alder Lake's integrated heat spreader (IHS) eventually takes a concave shape after several hours of operation

Worth the try for mid-end boards. The higher end boards usually have better sockets but it could also yield some improvements. I guess if your temps are okay you shouldn't really touch it. Some even say untorquing the socket torx screws by 1/4 will also do the trick. YMMV.

I'm thinking of pairing the 12700 with the H610 since this is the only 65W CPU with E cores and I don't intend to overclock anything or any GPU. However, I don't see this in the price list. Only the F variant is being sold here. Hope they will bring it in.

Reseller said 12700 maybe Feb then might have stock, about 30 to 40 dollars more.
