There is many difference and weighing wants and needs.

Not everyone buys a pc just to game. There are so many things you can do with a pc. Games, productivity, drawings, photo editing, video editing and rendering etc.

These things an i5 with 6c6t can never be enough for this kind of users. They need more cores and more threads to do faster workload and gets the job done.

Just get what u need. :)

Everybody's needs are different.

I game mostly at 120hz and do light video and photo editing, watch UHD quality netflix, 4k and 8k quality Youtube videos. So a i5 8600k at 5ghz would be most optimal for my needs together with a powerful GTX 1070(more important than a powerful CPU) as these applications use the gfx card instead of the CPU.

HT can be beneficial depending on the workload. You can find significant improvements if you look through reviews. That is why Intel happily charges a significant premium just for it.

Anyway, I assume you are only talking about desktop CPUs.

some games uses more threads to run.

i had a i5 6600k and upgraded to 7700k and then to 8700k.

Fps improved by more than 100 on csgo.

Depends on your purpose...

If its for games--
Some budget conscious gamers opt for i5 and invest more on GPU. Since most of the games are GPU intensive.

Some task for example in my case programming
I always go prioritized investing on CPU specially my task require more processing, multi-task and etc. (CPU intensive task), i7 thread counts is also higher vs i5 (simultaneous task)

Same as in Singapore, cars can only drive up to speed limit of 100km/h.
So why do people buy those atas car?

i7 is super important if you are doing thread intensive tasks like database and some programming

Gaming...? Well, it depends on what you play.

why be average when you can have better? It does not really cost that much more to be honest.

People always miss out the bigger Cache size on the processor :o

Inexperience people ask me to build computer and they always want i7 processor.
Ask them what is their workload, they say gaming, web surfing, basic usage and all those non video editing, intensive simulation stuff.
Tell them that i5 is enough but they insist on i7 because it will perform better.

Same as the more Vram the better. They think that GTX1050TI 4GB is better than GTX1060GB 3GB because 4GB > 3GB.

Because you could use the extra saved on a Better gpu?

If u ask me to pick i7 + 1050ti vs i5 + 1060 6gb, I will pick i5.
