Inexperience people ask me to build computer and they always want i7 processor.
Ask them what is their workload, they say gaming, web surfing, basic usage and all those non video editing, intensive simulation stuff.
Tell them that i5 is enough but they insist on i7 because it will perform better.

Same as the more Vram the better. They think that GTX1050TI 4GB is better than GTX1060GB 3GB because 4GB > 3GB.

The truth is, there will always be people like this. So no point arguing with them if they insist after you educated them. People always associate higher number as better, i.e. higher megapixels, faster speed, when they don't utilize it at all.

If got money, why wanna calculative and scrimp? The extra cores in an i7 u might use it in the future.

Certain games make use of multi cores if the games are cpu bound and basically the i7 have higher clock counts as well.

If using the reason of not utilizing now so don't get an i7, so why people need to save or invest their money. U not utilizing the money ma, so don't think of the future lor.

Aiyah to some, the cost difference of an i7 compared to an i5 is only 100 bucks. I believe for a working adult, 100 bucks is like less than a days work. Need to be so budget, scrim and save for this meh.

I always regret if I don’t go for the best that I can. If it’s within my means, I’ll do it.

Like I said previously, if you could use the 100 bucks to get a better gpu instead, why not? Many people especially singaporeans prefer bang for buck aka cheap and good. Why pay more when you don't lose any performance in what you envision your rig to do? Unless you are the type which wants your computer to run anything you throw at it. Then go buy a quantam supercomputer. 100% handle anything you want.

Also for the your saving analogy, it's wrong in this scenario. Savings, you can 100% get it back even after 5 years and the amount might even increase due to interest. Will your i7 give you the same value after 5 if you didn't use the ht?

some games uses more threads to run.

i had a i5 6600k and upgraded to 7700k and then to 8700k.

Fps improved by more than 100 on csgo.

seriously? get 8700k just to play CSGO? :s13:

the keyword. MIGHT.

if u don't need, what's the point of i7? I buy i7 partly because i run multiple VM inside.

i still not enough because i only got 4 core. =|

Yea wrong analogy to use. It's like why people spend on expensive food vs cai png when all u need to do is fill your tummy to keep u from hungry. Aiyah u get what I mean la.

People who spend on an i7 probably want something that can sort of be "future proof" in a way.

About saving 100 and spend on a better gpu, it's still just 100 bucks. Get a better gpu along with it lor.

The debate will goes on on both sides because the budget minded people will use all sorts of reasons to validate themselves.

Just get what you can afford. People who buy lots clothes doesn't mean within a month u can wear all the clothes right? Can afford it, why limit yourself. Again I gonna say its just 100 bucks only.

No la since when I said only to play csgo. It's an example to show that i7 and i5 have substantial differences unlike what people always claim. I play other games too. And it's a free upgrade for me. Don't ask why. =D

100 may not sound a lot to you, but is a stretch for significant number of families. If you have 100 bucks to spare, may be can donate to the poor and needy instead since its just small change to you.
As you said, budget minded people will find ways to validate, but we don't waste by buying what we need.
You mentioned about future proofing, I don't necessarily think most of these people who buy these i7 processors will hold on to them long. The next gen processors get released, and they quick go buy them.

So what if you get 100 FPS more when it's easily more than 100 to 200 FPS in the first place? It's a meaningless upgrade since you won't notice any improvement in user experience apart from the FPS counter telling you how fast it is.

That's your assumption that people who buy i7 won't hold long to them. Not true.

If 100 is really a stretch, then don't even ask i5 vs i7 right? Those that can ask definitely has the option to either buy an i5 or i7 ma.

Den again all sorts of reasons surely will cone out one la haha. Just get what u can afford is the bottomline. ;)

If still wanna debate somemore, ok U won the battle. Get an i5. Save the 100.

Winning or losing is besides the point. What really struck me was the way you say that its only 100 bucks. It is not really about budget, but more about putting the best use of your money by getting something that suits your usage/ needs.

I have no issue if you wish to contribute more to these companies. As mentioned, there will always be people that feel "more is better" kind of mentality, which I am totally cool. After all, it is your money

Nowadays even i7 with eight processor threads not enough to build some software.

Chrome takes > 8 hours to build on Linux with i7. And even longer on Windows.

Jitao go for dual-socket Xeon or Epyc 算了.

i do not understand why people go for i7 cpu for much extra premium w only added HT and up clock speed/more cache when both of these does not seem to significant up the performance.....

or people just buying becos that the most high end chip intel produce = best??

can some one can explain? :(

i7 can prevent bottleneck in Battlefield 1...

Actually this has been discussed millions of times.

For gaming, web, listen music, watching videos = i5

Photo/video work = i7/i9

For streaming to twitch etc, just use shadowplay, intel quicksync.

Here at hwz we recommend what is he best value/$ for ur needs.
Like some of the bros mentioned, if money is not an issue and u want i7 just for feel good factor, no one is stopping you.

Please loh, 100 bucks more for better CPU to use for min 3 year timeframe is not a lot.

And don't use that poor student/family nonsense excuse either, those should be looking at $250 gen 3 i5 quad Dell/Lenovo/HP refurbs and used video cards, not brand new current gen stuff.

I don't get it. How does upgrading from i5 to i7 extends your processor usability by minimum 3 years? You mean to say if a person don't buy i7, games/videos will bottleneck 3 years earlier?
