A lot of youtubers are bashing X299 in almost every directions.
I guess it all depend on how fast Zen+ is coming out. If its based on 7nm which has 3.3X density better than 14nm. Be rest assured Intel will accelerate their 10nm CPU to match because 7nm Zen is going to double the core count easily.
I think it will be a long time before we see 7nm. 10nm from Samsung isn't up to capacity yet.
I think we will see the same delays Intel has experienced recently from the other foundries.
You do realised AMD is using a more inferior 14nm process node as compared to Intel right? In that sense AMD have clearly won based on CPU design alone.
Had it not for GF 14nm poor performance, limiting Zen to 4GHz, Intel would have been in big serious trouble.
Once 10nm or 7nm comes, Intel dominance will end because AMD will create many small CPU die that is much more powerful than Ryzen and link them up together to create a giant monster using infinity fabric. Intel doom is really near.
1. Amd sold its foundry, today's gf. Nvidia and amd suffered with the rise of mobile because foundry capacity was diverted to the mobile arm market.
2. Without owning the foundry, amd cannot compete on an even footing with intel, the only vertically integrated chip company now.
3. I saw the size of the threadripper chip. It's palm size. Compare that to a Xeon chip and the size of amd's challenges when it comes to efficiency, yield, cost and turnaround is apparent.
4. Performance is just one part of the equation. What is their profit margin? Can it support r and d that can keep up? Where is the supporting tech? Where is the entrenched ecosystem? How about server application with rockstable dependability?
5. I can go on but so far, I'm reading with interest amd's effort. But not impressed, yet.

Maybe you should consider what is AMD RnD budget in the first place before Zen and how it turn out. By the limited resources they had but able to come out with such great product at low TDP is just beyond impressive. (They have won the perf-per watt against Intel, and so is perf-per-dollar.)
What I read at OCN, the base cost to make a 16C TR is less than US$170, and selling it for $849 would net a 400% margin, or $680 per chip. For overclocking variant, should be at around $830 per chip. Not much, but its a big improvement for AMD.
