This proves the fact that Intel wasn't planning l to improve their products in the first place. For both years, Intel is caught with their pants down tells how sluggish they are in response to competition.


The best part is AMD had 32C TR2 running on a Noctua-esque air cooler while Intel had to use an aquarium fridge to OC their 28C to 5GHz because running it at stock would've blatantly meant rebadging the Xeon 8180 :s13:

To be objective, if they were showing it as a overclocking proof of concept, I don't think there will be much negativity. However it seems like they were pointing to a 5Ghz 28core part which resulted in this backfire.

Ppl would still buy intel though, sheep loves to be deceived;)

There will always be a preferred brand, and in this case, it can't be helped since the rest of the CPU players are really small as compared to Intel.

Which is also how corporates will then play and abuse this reliance since people will still buy even if it cost more.

2 cores @ 5ghz, rest at 4.7ghz
Tested with a non delidded cpud and i would say way better than the 8700K

That extra premium one pays for the 8086K is well worth the clock speed increase. temps for all cores are very tight, implying that the contacts with the heat spreader have been improved.

Can't even get close to 4.7ghz with a delidded 8700K

5 GHz for a binned chip is not really impressive. You can get 5.2 GHz chips from Silicon Lottery.

How is it worth the premium over the i7 8700K? Basing on the price in Amazon now, there is a 71 bucks premium, which translates to a 20% premium for slight difference in performance.

There are different ways to use a good chip.

Maxed clocks (performance at cost of efficiency). Or 5ghz at "stock" voltages for those 8086ks in particular that will allow you to do 5GHz on SFF that would otherwise be unfeasible.

I have the option of 5ghz around 1.216-1.232v avx2.. Handbrake avx2 peak at maybe 120ish watts?.. not far from stock TDP. Or for casuals.

Not every use case is performance per dollar or performance per watt or absolute performance. It is *your personal mix* that matters.

Silicon Lottery not an option
when you need to deploy
a roomful of these

Been there done that. Custom OC definitely not an option for mass deployment.
The trouble it brings is totally not worth it.

When i was running the test, I enabled MCE
The max i went that was acceptable for me was around the 120+ i think 1.283v
With just CPU, no TT during AIDA64.

With GPU ( Was using an Asus Strix 1070TI 3 fan version )
The UFO struggled to handle the Thermal load past 1.3V.
Below 1.3V ws ok and TT did not rear its head.

These are specially binned chips, which is why they performed better in every way compared to most i7 8700K. However, there is also no guarantee that each one will perform well, in itself is also a lottery. Most reviews out there do mentioned the benefits of the chip as you did, but I they echo the same conclusion that it is a significant premium to pay for what is essentially an i7 8700K chip. If they came out with something like an 8 core, which is something different, then the steep premium may be worth it.

Are you aware of how Turbo Boost 2.0 frequency bins work since Sandy Bridge?
The 1 core to all core active turbo ratios (that you may override in K procs) are just frequency targets the cores can meet independently at any given point depending on the number of cores active. In other words, each core is already validated to take turns and hit single 5GHz turbo within the default voltages and TDP.

As a result, already in a slightly less than optimistic scenario you're already guaranteed to run 5GHz from the 1 to 6 core ratio on an 8086k at a slight voltage boost past stock.

How a "per core multiplier OC" with 5.2GHz would work on this platform?
(1 to 6 core active ratios at independent 52 than "synced" 52)

It is unlike in AMD's Zen 2 CPU, there are "specially" demarcated cores for running the 4.35GHz boost for 2700x in particular while the rest sport a lower peak frequency. The special cores are also marked with a yellow star on Ryzen master. The Stilt even mentions that there's a out-of-box performance variation depending on your special core location + OS scheduling factor combined.

For what its worth, 8086K's ~S$100 premium is there for a the 1-click MCE 5GHz at approximately factory voltages versus 4.7GHz MCE at factory voltages.. If you read the conclusions of an 8086K, there are 2 camps in terms of the conclusion.
The former extreme overclocker / current extreme overclocker POV (e.g. Der8auer, Steven B from Tweaktown, Ian Cutress from AT, Paul Alcorn of TH) the opinions are generally "buy it if you know what you're getting into".. Then you also have the camp projecting their hate, while not completely unjustified.

End of the day, difference of opinion its not a categorically good or bad thing.

or just stick 2700x all-core to 43x. not gonna sleep over a mere 50mhz (xfr2) :s13:

i will, however, lose sleep between 3.2ghz 8700 and 3.7ghz 8700k since i do rely on avx thingy on a regular basis
