hello, i'm a JC student and I'm enlisting next year. my batchmates have all gotten their enlistment letter but I've yet to cause i have 1 more medical appointment to go for in Dec 3rd.

Couldn't schedule it earlier cause of A's..
anyway I have an overseas, SSC sanctioned competition where I get to represent Singapore next year from 2nd Aug to 8th Aug. However it's not a very recognised sport (ultimate frisbee).

my worry is that I won't be able to go. from what i know the latest intake for JC students is in May. seeing that I have yet to even receive my enlistment letter, is it likely that I'll enlist in may? if so, will I be able to take leave or off to go for the comp? idk how BMT and stuff really works

what is the recommended path i can take now? call up CMPB and try to arrange for early enlistment or what?

If i'm not wrong i'm currently PES C9L9 (torn ligaments in both ankles and other sports related injuries...), and I have a heart structural deformity (reason why I have an appointment in 3 dec).

would really appreciate your input, been stressing over this for quite a while haha. really would like to go for the comp.

I think can get SSC to recommend to MINDEF for you to go for the competition right. But of course subjected to approval

I heard that it's entirely up to my "boss"?
i assume it's the dude in charge of the unit i'm posted to? so basically whether i can go or not is up to his approval and no one else's?

Probably.

I'll say maybe he's your first hurdle to clear. If he says no, it may end there, but if he says yes, there maybe someone else higher up who approves it.

the competition is still quite far off. i think its hard for you to pre-empt so early ahead.

first, get your official pes status, go through bmt and see posting.

if u really not pes A, or B, then most likely you will be in unit by then. then things become easier cos you can officially take leave to go for the competition.

else if after BMT and then go training school, then things become much more complicated.

but then again, some commanders will question you playing high-impact sports with your pes status.

no matter the case, I would say speak to your direct supervisors (after bmt) asap. i'm sure it can all be negotiated.

Yeah my seniors did tell me about the higher ups questioning my pes status.. But to be fair I didn't ask for it leh, all I did was submit my medical documents and tell them about my injuries. So I don't know what I should do if that is indeed questioned..

So would it be safer it I enlisted earlier? Like the February batch instead of the may one? Will it make a real difference?
And if I haven't gotten my pes status, will it affect which batch I go into?

Actually its very common for sportsmen to get lower PES cause of all the injuries they suffer.

Probably yes. When's the earliest opportunity you have to actually go for your final medical appointment? I know you got A levels but why drag till dec? I reckon people who get to enlist in the earlier batch would hv gotten their letter already and u r pretty much condemned to enlisting in the second batch.

please do not be mistaken. they are not blaming you for getting lower pes status.
they are more concerned about you getting injured further in the competition.
like it or not, you are directly under their care and they do have a duty to look out for you.

honestly, what answer do you want? i tell u enlist earlier better but then unit dun approve you to go then how? u come beat me up?

also, there are other intakes as well you could be inserted into. I was from JC but I didn't join my JC batch too, I joined the mixed group, which means non-PSLE to poly, JC also have. interesting bunch but that is another story

for now, nothing u can do, go through the enlistment process and see how it pans out...so many factors ahead why bother to worry now. if i can foresee ur future, I rather look at the winning toto numbers.
