The Mandalorian, Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew May Have Character Crossovers
The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau has confirmed while adjacent series
Ahsoka and
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew will largely be doing their own thing, character crossovers are still possible.
This information comes courtesy Seif Zaki, who was in attendance at
Empire VIP's celebration of
The Mandalorian, which featured Favreau himself as a special guest. During the event, Favreau stated that
The Mandalorian Season 4 has already been written, and that Doug Chiang has begun working on concept art. Favreau also confirmed that
Ahsoka and
Skeleton Crew -- which are set in the same timeframe as
The Mandalorian -- are both in post-production. He further stated that
Ahsoka and
Skeleton Crew may have character crossovers, despite being
standalone Star Wars stories.
At this stage, it's too early to tell which characters from which shows will cross over into other shows as
Star Wars'
Mandalorian sub-franchise carries forward. However, Favreau previously confirmed that
Skeleton Crew characters would not appear in The Mandalorian's fast-approaching third season, so that's at least one potential combination ruled out for the time being. This would also seem to confirm that while
Skeleton Crew is set in the same timeframe as
The Mandalorian, it is not a direct spinoff.
In contrast,
Ahsoka is a direct spinoff of
The Mandalorian (as well as a sequel to the animated series
Star Wars Rebels). Rosario Dawson debuted as the live-action version of fan-favorite character Ahsoka Tano in
The Mandalorian Season 2, subsequently reprising the role in the spinoff limited series
The Book of Boba Fett. However, seeing as how Ahsoka's solo series reportedly takes her
beyond the reaches of the known Star Wars galaxy, it remains to be seen if she'll be able to return to
The Mandalorian in time for Season 3. It also remains to be seen if there will be opportunities for
Ahsoka and
Skeleton Crew to bypass their mothership show altogether and simply cross over with each other.
The Star Wars Universe Is Ever-Expanding
Of course, it has long been known that Lucasfilm's small-screen
Star Wars franchise was building to a climactic crossover event. Originally, the tent-poles were meant to be
The Mandalorian,
Ahsoka and Rangers of the New Republic. However,
Rangers of the New Republic has since been shelved, with its story ideas being
folded into The Mandalorian itself. Meanwhile,
Skeleton Crew remains something of a wild card as far as the so-called "Favreau-Verse" is concerned, though fans can likely expect to learn more about Jon Watts and Christopher Ford's
Star Wars series -- and its place in the overall franchise -- in the coming months.
The Mandalorian Season 3 premieres on Disney+ on March 1.
Ahsoka and
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew are both expected to premiere on the platform later this year.
