Yep that is why. SG ok liao lah. Want running B type race, just go for parkrun experience. At most run 2 rounds of parkrun (10km) and try to lap others. haha.

Some cyclists fly over to Mallorca Spain even or similar for cycling holidays, some take sabbatical leave for hobby. pocket deep deep.

For me not so attas. I chinese bike only, play foldie and road bike choose di2 105 7170 can liao. (it's like racewalking and running, you can train enough to racewalk at 5:10 min/km pace for 2.4km...haha).

IF really spoil untill cannot repair, just throw and get a new bike. haha, dont fuss it.

Even running shoes, nowadays Qiaodan Plaid can liao, more than enough to cut it.
I do have long term plans to travel to ride but those wouldn't be competitive. More along the lines of what you see advertised as cycling tour packages by tour groups, something like those from jactours. Would probably start with Malaysia(since I haven't ridden out of Singapore in 10 years since I started liking cycling) , then maybe further to Taiwan and then we'll see.

If I ever do participate in any events it would likely be in Singapore. Overseas events are going to be a big headache logistics wise, time and costs as well.
I talk about triathlon all this while but it's really closer to a duathalon for me😅 the only time I get to swim is if I sacrifice a swim or run session on the weekends or if I call up my friend to let me in to his condo to use the pool , but sometimes either he's not there or by the time I get home on weekdays ,it's already closed.

I stay in the east, so the only 1 real climb here is Hendon road but it gives strong haunted vibes💀easy Access to the house tmcr tho. If I do loops on Faber it's the morse side loop , not the super loop which includes the Bahru side🤷‍♀️ usually 3 to 8

BTW in case you are looking at helments and "want to try", do consider Rudy project's Wingdream. Really solid and super comfy, not sure if placebo but together with a bottle in your jersey, the effect maciam like nearly could feel it. I have not run mine under hot weather but night time ok. It has lots of space at the sides and front so specs users ok wont hit the specs like others would (eg those short tail cramped ones like Wing, Codatronca, Adwatt, Procen etc).
But since SG T100 is so undulating, so not sure if the aero is that needed or not. But if you want to play aero a bit during training and "look pro", this is it.

Like Hambini's 2.5SFF rule, ie 190W and 175W or > 15w difference then you can feel it. I think this helmet + water bottle in front is around this ballpark even at 35kmh. Maciam like 30-35mm wheels vs 88mm wheels or possibly even trispoke front and full disk rear. No joke. And you tell me how much $$$, effort and time you need to spend for 88mm race wheels / trispoke + disk....and then you swap in/out for races and training.

(T100 banned front water bottle down jersey in around Apr 2024 but seriously for age groupers, nearly impossible to enforce and DNF you one lah, esp for duathlon where it is so bloody dark lol...like the 12m no drafting rule also, how to fully enforce)

Expensive, but bloody worth it, and it might work in SG weather esp if you have heat trained simply coz of the small vents + space around your head. Just get 1 solid one, that works, and be done with it for the next decade. For T100 duathlon it definitely would work, just that the triathlon a bit hot (Actually very hot) for the triathlon.

Unfortunately big size is sold out, i have the large size. Very popular helmet, i think many age groupers and pros know it really works.

But actually electronic shifter better . Alot uphills and climbs you need to be fast to be able to change to a climbing gear. So you will not panicked and fall.

I looked online and there was this article about the guy who did it in BMX, seems like an special exception granted.

Most of the bikes I see there are still triathlon bikes that are VERY expensive

Yeah...but just to take note, only T100. And local metasprint events.

Stuff like Malaysia's Powerman duathlon only allows road and tri/TT bikes. I believe Ironman events also and most other overseas events. Just that, like you, i have zero interest in going oversease. haha.
Just that some folks, even running, they do marathon tourism and similar.
Like they wanna get the Golden trinity, in countries like Boston, London, Tokyo, where there is a qualifying standard (And it is not low) + you ballot for it.
Or some even wanna finish all the Platinum Label worldwide marathons. (SCSM is only Gold Label)...then all the medals hang on the wall very satki one. hahaa :ROFLMAO:
Like collecting pokemon or basketball cards.

Question for experienced triathletes, as per the question in the title. What should I get with a budget of about 4-5k

*Or upgrade my current bike

Additional info

27M, Long time cyclist for about 10 years, more structured in the last 4.
Recently just began trying out triathlon, been at it since June last year. Pretty weak at flat road riding
More of a climber type since I am 63kg at 1.8m.

I do my own maintenance and would much prefer a mechanical drivetrain and Rim brakes
Just get S works TT bike

I actually don't like the look of most TT aero helmets, looks a bit like mushroom 😅.
My current wheels are box section and I ride almost exclusively after sunset. I've tried morning rides but my performance just sucks no matter what I've tried, more sleep, eat more, carb loading , rest completely the day before, all doesn't work.
Am 27 so not an age grouper?

I currently ride downtube shifters, but it's indexed. The biggest downside is that it's impossible to sprint and/or climb out of the saddle and shift at the same time
