You don't understand usually these apps target the latest SDK levels for security reasons. And any level too low their required levels or too high will usually result in an error or lockout to prevent tinkering. OR they are using a specific API call that has been changed from expected behavior resulting in a crash.

Apple at the moment DOES NOT take in any application submission with iOS 12 targetted until GM build is released where APIs are finalized and fixed

I have tried CarPlay with iOS 12, so far no (major) issues - apps used: TuneIn Radio, Maps, Music, WhatsApp, Phone.

I think there isn’t Google Maps or Waze yet as they need to be updated for iOS 12. Also, the keynote that shows both apps on CarPlay is to just show that iOS 12 can now allow navigation apps to make use of CarPlay, which previously the API isn’t available for developers.

But don’t get hopes up yet, as so far there is no confirmation by these apps’ developers that there are in the works for it and if it will be available on the day iOS 12 launches.

Try reset the setting “share across devices” off and back on if you enable on mutliple idevices . Mine was weird before last reset

Did you update your OS? Usually it resets after an OS update from what I've seen with the betas so far.
