wah... next is GPS?? :D:s13:
Frankly speaking, I feel iRobot is pressured into re-designing Roomba with alternative navigation methods, they just want to prove they're capable of sophisticated system.

iRobot's forte is un-guided self-navigating robots like their Military robots & Space Exploration robots. These robots navigate purely by "counting steps" & remembering how many left & right turns, they're truly independent "maze navigating mice".
Beacon assisted navigation will be impractical in war-zone & other planets.

Like all curious users, I like to make some sense of Roomba's seemingly random movement.
This is my interpretation of AWARE algorithm:
1) assess size of area by finding the longest diagonal clear path
2) fill in some details by following walls
3) after a few diagonal criss-cross, unobstructed areas are established, move to middle & spiral, spiralling is most efficient way to cover large area
4) overall objective: roughly cover most area in shortest time, if more time is allowed, go for 2nd round & so on...

We should apply AWARE when we eat buffet, touch & go for every dish, then round 2 & so on...

Go Neato! It cleans my house does one room at a time in a single pass, not like my old Roomba that takes forever as it mindlessly bump its way around... :) The Roomba is much cuter and pet-like however :s7:

Got video or more information to share on your Neato? The Pros and the Cons?

Youtube have video of it cleaning a user's room. Slow & methodical, it's constantly scanning surrounding using laser. i think it has 1 bristle brush rather than a counter rotating pair.

It's actually a rubber beater brush rather than a bristle brush. Kind of useless on hard floor so Neato basically moves around vacuuming only unlike roomba which sweeps and vacuum.

Compared to my old Roomba, the Neato actually does a better job on hard floors as its suction is much, much stronger than Roomba's which is almost wimpy in comparison. The Roomba bristle brush is a nightmare to maintain if you have anyone with long hair in the house as the hair tends to get all wrapped up around the brush, gears and axles. Neato stays much cleaner; hair and dirt ends up in the dirt bin where they belong.

I do agree with the stronger suction that Neato has but the beater brush is useless on hard floor. Unlike US where most home are carpeted, the beated brush would works great in losening particles from the carpet.

It's basically doing nothing on hardfloor and would be great if it could be turn off as it drains the battery too.

Neato is still in it's early stages of development and based on the reports from the states, it is having so many problems in this initial stage. I would say you are very lucky to get a good set without any issues. Even till now, there are still so many reports of the RPS error, unable to dock issue and the thumping sound from the beater bar.

The laser RPS navigation is an excellent technology. The shape is supposed to allow Neato to cleans corner better but it is not doing it's job. Without a sidebrush like Roomba, Neato still leaves a 2 inch untouch area from the edges of wall.

Cleanmate QQ is great at picking up small debris. You will be more impressed if you see Roomba's intelligience and speed. I own a QQ before and give up after the battery's dead.

You can checkout here for iRobot product in Singapore:
