iRobot Scooba experience

Hi guys, I noticed there are a number of gurus here so if you guys are kind enough to help I need a recommendation for robot vacuums.

Apparently I drop a lot of hair, both types, on our very white homogenous tiles. Wife has been complaining and getting a robot vacuum seems like a great solution.

- We live in a 5 room hdb(120 sqm).
- Bedrooms have timber flooring but everywhere else is tiled.
- Kitchen is open concept with no walls
- Bathrooms have a 4cm step at their enterances
- We have a precious hand woven thick carpet in the middle of our living room
- We also have 2 vacuums already, a normal dry one and a karcher steam/vacuum combo... (yes I'm lazy thus the robot)


As we already have a few cleaning devices, I'm just looking for the most cost efficient robot to clear the hair before my wife gets home. Any help is appreciated.

Can always use a full length Bristle brush for the Scooba. Improved efficiency and more bristles would ensure better scrubbing and washing. Better on tough stains too, adds more oomph to the scrubbing. Works with all Scooba models. The regular brush seems a little hollow and feels like it lack a little something.

The full bristles were from pre-2008 models, u would know if u had been selling iRobot products long enough. If u think since 2008, iRobot re-designed the brushes to have half-bristles so as to reduce efficiency, and hopefully save a bit on material, then ur reasoning is severely flawed.
I won't elaborate on why iRobot re-designed them, since I don't like to provide free lesson for people to become instant experts.

And very curious, what other phased-out iRobot items does the China factory carry? I suppose they can't bear to dump these stuff and are donating them to u.

It is just like why they redesign the 6 arm to 3 arm sidebrush. Full lenght brush does not really scrubs well and given the rpm they're rorating, the contact is more than enough to give it a good thorough scrub.

The Roomba 500 series with Aerovac bin or 700 series would do a fair job of cleaning your home. However, with a floor area of around 120sqm, it may miss some spots during a cycle of cleaning, you would properly still find strands of hair on the floor after its done.
The Roomba may also climb up your hand woven carpet and may cost some wear and tear of carpet overtime if you let it run on it everyday. You may have to block it from climbing up the carpet with virtual walls and depending on the position of the carpet, that may cost the Roomba to miss some other areas you did want it to clean.
Most of the Robotic cleaners are suitable for the floor types you have and none can climb a height of 4cm to enter your toilet.
May want to consider a robotic cleaner which allows you to block off targeted areas (like maybe your carpet) and has a systemic way of cleaning to ensure you would not see strands of hair on the floor when you return home from work. The Iclebo arte ($749), which can be blocked off by magnetic tape, or Lg roboking ($799), which does not climb, may work well for you. Both have dual side brushes too.
Do read a range of reviews online and I am sure you would make an excellent choice.

my wife also dropped a lotsa hair. but my house is full homogeneous tiling (no kerb between kitchen/living room), about 105sqm. currently thinking of neato but not sure if there's a better option (most cost efficient).

If cost is a concern, The new Neato XV-21 ($599) would be a fairly good and cost effective model. It has a systematic navigation system and would go from your rooms to living room to kitchen seamlessly. The minus point being the lack of a side brush. The Roomba 500 series is about the same price and may be of consideration too. With a side brush it may sweep the edges and corners better, provided it actually did go there during the cleaning cycle, Roomba may miss some areas and you may still find hair on the floor after the cleaning.
If you are particular of hairs lying around on your bright homogeneous tiling, I would feel the Neato would probably clear most of it during the cleaning cycle. You may use a microfiber wipe for the edges on a weekly basis.

Just to share my experience - I too have the same problem as you with regards to wifey's long hair. My experience with Roomba is it does pick it up but a lot get tangled in the brush which make cleanup the Roomba a chore. So these robots will work for picking up hair - just that after that u need to spend some time to clean up the brush of hair. The new Aerovac bin suppose to reduce this problem but not sure how good it is as I never use before.

My main problem is not much of dust - rather my wife's long hair - so now I'm looking at Mint Plus with disposable Magiclean dry wipe.

The Lg Roboking 6142 LVM ($799) would have no problem picking up long hair. Similarly to most robotic cleaner, you do have to do simple mantainence of the brushes. Even for the Roomba brushes, actually with the use of the cleaning tool provided, getting the hair out from the brushes should be fairly simple.
The Lg roboking allows for the attachment of a microfiber wipe too as a secondary mode of cleaning, after it has vacuumed.

Bro, I think u can consider aerovac upgrade since u alrdy have a roomba, it does help w the hair compared to the original bin. I have a mint not the mint plus, I do not find it superior in terms of 'sweeping' hair n dust, but it's definitely less noisy and I wld rec mint + if u wanna use it to 'mop' the floor...
